Red Sea Global finished an expansion of AlWajh International Airport in northwestern Saudi Arabia to increase its annual capacity from 100,000 to 500,000 passengers. The facility serves as the primary gateway to Amaala, a 4,200-square-kilometer mega-resort currently under development along the Red Sea coast.

The upgraded infrastructure now accommodates a wider range of commercial aircraft, including the Airbus A320 and Boeing B737. The airfield also supports helicopter and seaplane operations to facilitate multi-modal transit within the region. This technical upgrade enables the airport to manage increased traffic volumes as the Amaala destination matures.

Regional Architecture Inspires Terminal Renovation

The architecture of the renovated terminal draws direct inspiration from the Tabuk coastline and the local building traditions of AlWajh. Designers integrated these regional motifs to establish a specific sense of place for arriving visitors. This aesthetic approach aligns the transit hub with the broader cultural identity of the northwestern province.

At present, the state-owned carrier Saudia operates three weekly flights from Riyadh and two from Jeddah. Red Sea Global expects to begin international departures soon, transitioning the site into a fully international-ready facility. This shift supports the logistical requirements of the $6.1 billion Amaala project, which eventually will comprise eight distinct resorts.

“Today the people of Tabuk have an international-ready airport that increases connectivity to the rest of the Kingdom and beyond.”

John Pagano, Chief Executive, Red Sea Global

The project functions as a critical component of regional urban planning and economic strategy. By quintupling the passenger capacity, the developers provide the necessary scale to support the influx of tourists and staff for the surrounding coastal developments. The expansion also strengthens the transport interface between the Red Sea coast and major domestic hubs.

Project Team: Red Sea Global (Developer/Client). Location: AlWajh, Saudi Arabia.

Project Notes: Expansion completed June 2026. Capacity increased to 500,000 annual passengers. Facility supports A320 and B737 aircraft.
