Our civilization reacts to and plans for Force-Majeure situations on a variety of different scales, whether they result from a divine act or a stronger force. Inequities in our society are exacerbated by disasters, both natural and man-made, in part because they disproportionately restrict access to education, healthcare, green spaces, fresh food, and transportation for those who need it the most. By fortifying our local communities, we can withstand potential Force Majeure situations better. What support and care can we offer to the most vulnerable individuals in our society as design professionals? AIA Austin COTE and the DesignVoice Committee of AIA Austin together propose Force-Majeure, a design competition that tackles current concerns having an impact on our lives.

The multi-brief format of this year’s ideas competition will test teams’ abilities to find a local problem that one of the Framework for Design Excellence’s three guiding principles—Design for Equitable Communities, Design for Water, or Design for Well-being—might help to alleviate and to come up with a workable solution that does so. The proposed designs will explore the connection between major world crises and smaller, more manageable local design interventions in addition to offering solutions to immediate problems.
