Competition Brief

Organized by Archiol Competitions, the Community Library & Learning Space is an international design competition inviting architects, designers, and creative thinkers to reimagine the library as an inclusive, flexible, and inspiring shared space that nurtures knowledge, creativity, and collective growth. The competition recognizes that libraries today are no longer silent repositories of books but dynamic community anchors that support lifelong learning, social interaction, and cultural exchange. The competition is open to all, with no professional qualification required. Participants may compete individually or in teams of up to four members. All submissions must be in English.

Intent

Participants are challenged to design a contemporary community-focused library that responds to evolving learning needs while fostering interaction across age groups, cultures, and abilities. The competition encourages designs that balance functionality, flexibility, and emotional connection to learning, exploring how architecture can serve as a catalyst for social inclusion, digital and physical knowledge sharing, and the creation of welcoming and accessible environments. For related ideas on civic and public architecture, explore our Architecture section.

Purpose

The competition aims to generate innovative architectural solutions that encourage reading, learning, and informal education; promote social inclusion and community engagement; adapt to both digital and physical modes of knowledge sharing; and create inspiring environments for people of all backgrounds. Beyond producing winning designs, the competition seeks to contribute to the broader global conversation about the evolving role of the library as social infrastructure in the 21st century.

Requirements

Participants may select their own site, which should represent a community-oriented context such as an urban neighbourhood, suburban area, rural settlement, or underserved locality. The site selection must be clearly justified in relation to the community it serves. The proposed building programme should thoughtfully incorporate public reading areas for children, youth, and adults; book stacks and digital media zones; flexible learning spaces and workshops; community meeting rooms; informal gathering zones; administration and staff areas; and optionally outdoor reading or learning spaces. Designs should allow for adaptability to future growth and evolving community needs. For inspiration on educational and civic design, visit our Sustainable Architecture section.

Jury

The jury panel for this competition has not been individually named on the competition page. Archiol Competitions states that an expert panel conducts both internal and external review of all submitted proposals. Entries are evaluated based on design innovation, responsiveness to the brief, social impact, spatial quality, and sensitivity to community context. The results and jury assessments are announced on 17 September 2026.

✦ ArchUp Competition Review

The Community Library & Learning Space competition is one of the most socially relevant briefs in the current competition calendar. By leaving site selection open to participants, Archiol allows designers to respond to communities they know and care about, which often produces more grounded and contextually sensitive proposals than competitions tied to a fixed location. The programme is deliberately broad, covering everything from children’s reading areas to digital media zones and outdoor learning spaces, giving participants genuine creative latitude while keeping the challenge focused on a coherent civic typology.

One distinctive feature of this competition is its pricing model. The stepped fee structure starting at just $14 makes this one of the most accessible open competitions available anywhere, and the gradual increase rewards early commitment. The absence of named cash prizes is a notable limitation, with rewards instead consisting of publication, certificates, jury reports, and community memberships, which carry real professional value for emerging designers but may deter more established practitioners. Overall, this is an excellent entry point for students and early-career architects seeking recognition and experience in civic and educational design. Discover more on ArchUp Competitions.

Conclusion

The Community Library & Learning Space Competition 2026 is a well-conceived and highly accessible challenge for designers who believe in the social power of architecture. With a meaningful brief, complete site freedom, a very low entry fee, and results announced within a tight timeline, it offers a practical and inspiring opportunity for architects and students at any stage of their careers.
