It provides flexible galleries, space for educational programming, and public gathering areas.

The new building also provides expanded access to the museum’s permanent collection,

which includes important works of modern and contemporary art, and a world-class special exhibition program.

The new building is the new home of OCMA’s thought-provoking artwork across a wide range of media,

by artists from diverse backgrounds in its new location.

OCMA moved its former Newport Beach location on June 17, 2018,

after a celebrated 41-year history at its current location.

Morphosis revealed its concept design for the new OCMA in 2018 and construction began in September 2019.

Although the building was scheduled to open in 2021, the project was officially opened on October 8, 2022.

Design features

The two-story building consists of approximately 25,000 square feet (2,322 square meters),

reconfigurable gallery spaces, and a 10,631 square foot (988 square meters) attic balcony.

The museum has a total floor area of 53,000 square feet (4,924 square meters),

consisting of a main floor dedicated to open exhibition space, a mezzanine dedicated to the James B. and Rosalyn L. Upper Plaza exhibitions,

and a spacious roof terrace accounting for 70 percent of the building’s floor space.

The main floor includes two main pavilions: the Muzzy Family Special Exhibitions Pavilion and The Anton and Jennifer Segerstrom Permanent Collection Pavilion,

each comprising four flexible galleries – to accommodate artworks from a variety of scales and media.

The storefront gallery, which includes The Avenue of the Arts Gallery in Memory of Yvonne de C Segerstrom,

is located along the Avenue of the Arts.

Offering passers-by a view of the gallery space,

The Visionaries gallery is another smaller, intimate space that connects to the mezzanine galleries via an overhead bridge.

The Upper Plaza, which offers an expansive rooftop terrace,

is designed to host exhibitions and events, as well as a grand staircase,

a daylit exhibition and education hall, administrative offices, a gift shop, and a café.

Another link created at ground level via stadium seating connects the Museum to the Segerstrom Center for the Arts,

Julia and George Argyros Plaza, providing an attractive public gathering space.

A striking and memorable environment

The overall design of the building fulfills the need for the museum space to be flexible and functional, as well as attractive and memorable.

It designs a rich and varied experience for the visitor,

from approaching and entering the procession through the galleries, and finally,

an invitation to linger on the stairs, in the café, or in the museum shop.

By creating a gradation in architectural intensity, from the intricate shapes at the entrance to the museum to the rectilinear, fluid forms within the galleries,

the building is an unforgettable and stunning environment for formal and informal experiences with art.

The building has such a strong connection between indoor and outdoor spaces

that it can encourage visitors to immerse themselves in the famous climate of Southern California,

where light, air and space have influenced generations of artists.

On the exterior of the building, Morphosis created a high-performance façade with undulating bands made of white terracotta tiles.

Thanks to the nature of these panels, the building presents an overall form that wraps from outside to inside,

and references the shapes and palette of the neighboring architecture.

Another major feature of the building is its external public staircase that serves as an attractive gathering space for pedestrians and visitors at the museum entrance.

This exterior public staircase creates a dialogue with Connector,

the monumental sculpture by Richard Serra at the heart of the Segerstrom Art Center.

The Education Pavilion is a dynamic architectural space for educational activities and performance that hovers above the towering, light-filled atrium lobby.

Lit by a full height window from which The Croul Family Education Seating looks out onto the balcony.

On the museum’s terrace level, visitors will meet Verdant Café and Chalmers Pavilion event space,

providing visitors with an elegant dining experience in a bright and innovative environment.

The Sweet James Bergener Bar also complements the Fueling Station Café on the Museum’s first floor.

The museum shop, called THE MIND,

is located within the atrium in the retail space named for OCMA donors Bill Witte and Keiko Sakamoto,

and the administrative spaces are located on the mezzanine floor.

While the basic structure is built of structural steel and concrete,

white terracotta tiles, glazed curtain wall, exposed concrete,

metal panels, precast concrete and landscaped roof terrace are the main materials and elements that make up the high-performance building façade.

OCMA is recognized as an innovative art museum with a history of active discovery and engagement with living artists at pivotal points in their careers.

The museum’s collection includes more than 4,500 objects,

with a focus on art produced during the 20th and 21st centuries.

In its new permanent home located on the campus of the Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Costa Mesa,

California, OCMA will continue to support the transformative potential of art.
