Design unveiled to transform Sydney’s Powerhouse Ultimo into a world-class museum

Design and details have been revealed for the Australian Museum of Applied Arts and Science – Powerhouse Ultimo in Sydney, Australia.

Where concept design is led by Australian team Architectus, Durbach Block Jaggers Architects,

Tyrrell Studio, Youssofzay + Hart, Akira Isogawa, Yerrabingin,

Finding Infinity and Arup to create a world-vision museum for the people of New South Wales.

The museum is set to undergo a major transformation to celebrate the best of its past,

with innovative museum exhibition and educational spaces, following the announcement of the winning architectural design for its renovation.

The team’s submission to the museum was chosen unanimously

by an expert jury after the National Design Competition, which began earlier this year.

Design features

The new design scheme contains expanded museum exhibition spaces,

including international museum standard galleries for immersive exhibitions and learning programmes.

A new urban space has been created to connect the museum to the merchandise line,

which will create a major new public square for Sydney.

This will also increase the public space open to external programs.

The Harris Street frontage is set to be revitalized with creative studios,

to support education and industry programs and will create new opportunities for access to the museum’s library and archives.

Powerhouse is also located at the intersection of art, design, science and technology,

and plays an important role in engaging communities with contemporary ideas and issues.

It was declared a new landmark by a US$1.4 billion infrastructure regeneration programme, kickstarted by the construction of the flagship museum,

Powerhouse Parramatta; expanded research and public facilities at Powerhouse Castle Hill;

And the iconic Powerhouse Ultimo revamp; and the ongoing operation of the Sydney Observatory.

The Powerhouse Ultimo revitalization will reinvigorate one of Australia’s most respected museums,

offering fascinating museum experiences and expanded exhibition

spaces that will provide new levels of access to the Powerhouse collection.

The design will enable the museum to showcase exclusive international exhibitions

and programs that support the creative industries.

The Powerhouse Ultimo renovation is also part of the NSW Government’s record investment

in cultural infrastructure, reinforcing Sydney’s reputation as a global cultural destination.
