Overview

The Concrete Pavilion competition, part of Buildner’s acclaimed Material Studies series, invites architects, designers, and students to reimagine one of the world’s most widely used construction materials. Far from its typical perception as gray, utilitarian, and monolithic, this competition challenges participants to explore concrete as a medium of beauty, innovation, and storytelling.

Participants are tasked with designing a pavilion—temporary or permanent—not exceeding 50 m², that reveals concrete’s rich sensory potential and raises awareness about its evolving uses. Through creative experimentation with textures, forms, colors, finishes, and even sustainable mixes, the pavilion must inspire new appreciation for this ancient yet ever-relevant material.

✦ ArchUp Editorial Insight

This competition highlights the architectural shift toward material storytelling and sustainable thinking. The decision to remove written explanations pushes designers to rely solely on spatial clarity and visual nuance—a refreshing yet demanding constraint. One potential limitation is the subjectivity of purely visual interpretation, which might obscure the intent in more abstract submissions. Nevertheless, the challenge offers an essential laboratory for material research, where concrete becomes both a sculptural medium and a call for more responsible construction practices.
