TerraViva has launched the EASDALE FERRY OFFICE, a new architecture competition focused on renovating and extending the small ferry hub that connects Easdale Island, Scotland, to the mainland. The competition offers a total prize pool of €7,000 and will be judged by an international panel, including Stephen Roberts from Northumbria University, Kefei Yan from Foster + Partners, Maria Alejandra Icaza P. from Luis Pons Design Lab, and Christian Schmitt from the German University in Cairo.
Competition Brief
Participants are required to renovate and extend the existing ferry hub, which includes the ferryman’s office and passenger waiting room. These quaint structures, located near the island’s edge, are the first to greet visitors and residents as they arrive. The competition calls for new shelters that enhance the visitor experience while celebrating the unique natural context of Easdale. The renovation should not only provide protection from harsh weather but also offer suitable amenities for residents and visitors. The project should incorporate sustainable practices and thoughtful design, enhancing the experience of arriving on the island. Participants have the freedom to propose extensions of any size, but must consider appropriate materials and construction techniques given Easdale’s limited access and challenging landscape. Integration into the existing context is key.
Prizes and Mentions
The prizes include €3,000 for first place, €1,000 for second place, and €500 for third place. There will also be ten golden mentions worth €250 each, ten honorable mentions offering a free competition coupon, and thirty finalists whose projects will be published on TerraViva channels.
Submission Requirements
Participants must submit two A1 panels (59.4 x 84.1 cm) in landscape orientation and a brief description of their proposal, ranging between 250 to 500 words.
Jury Panel
The jury panel comprises Stephen Roberts from Northumbria University in the UK, Nuria Vidal Domper from Dompercastells in Switzerland, Kefei Yan from Foster + Partners in the UK, Maria Alejandra Icaza P. from Luis Pons Design Lab in the USA, Salwa Cherkaoui El Baraka from Riversen in France, Christian Schmitt from the German University in Cairo, Egypt, Jahnavi Bhatt from Benoy in the UK, and Shaun Young from Northumbria University in the UK.
