Archstorming is launching a replacement competition which will search for designs for the longer term schools of the NGO Abay Ethiopia, a corporation founded in Spain in 2009 that operates in Walmara, Ethiopia, with the aim of fighting against poverty and promoting equal opportunities, mainly through the event of Education, Health and Community support projects generally .

One of their most vital projects has been the development of a Polyfunctional Center and Preschool in Gaba Kemisa, a “kebele” (village) located within the district of Walmara, within the Regional State of Oromia.

The center of Abay features a great influence on the remainder of the adjacent towns, especially on the kebeles Hiddi and Dillu. the very fact that in these kebeles there’s no infancy education service means children who want to access it need to walk several kilometers each day to Abay’s center, which makes it very difficult for them to remain in class .

Challenge

Abay wants to support the Hiddi and Dillu primary schools with the development of two preschools in these villages. this may ensure access to education for the youngsters of those villages and can help the whole community within the area, as happened quite 10 years ago with the creation of the middle and faculty in Gaba Kemisa. The winning proposal are going to be built.

The main challenge within the current competition is to make sure that the model that’s developed are often adapted to the various places where Abay wants to create schools.
As with Dillu and Hiddi, each terrain is different, so a versatile model are going to be needed to adapt to every space.

The new schools will contains an initial construction of 4 classrooms, latrines, a covered courtyard and an open courtyard. Also, the proposals should include the choice to feature additional spaces like a multifunctional space, kitchen, dining room or a corral. See more detailed information within the briefing of the competition.
