The biennial takes place from June 12 to September 20, 2026, under the theme “Rehearsing the Unexpected,” bringing together contemporary art, ecological transition, industrial heritage, and territorial transformation.

The inaugural Bienal Climática, or Climate Biennial, will take place in Avilés, Asturias, Spain, from June 12 to September 20, 2026, across 13 venues throughout the city. Directed by artistic director Amanda Masha Caminals, the multidisciplinary biennial brings together contemporary art, industrial heritage, and ecological transition.

Titled “Rehearsing the Unexpected,” the biennial brings together more than 40 international artists and collectives to explore the complex relationship between climate change, industrial history, environmental transformation, and local communities. Its program is structured around three thematic areas: Weather Station, Present Industries, and Grief and Joy, addressing atmospheric changes, industrial memory, ecological loss, sustainability, and collective forms of celebration.

The event features more than 60 public activities, participatory architecture projects, citizen laboratories, and experimental art-education programs. Through exhibitions, artistic projects, research, and community participation, Bienal Climática creates a space for dialogue about ecological futures and the transformation of territories shaped by industry.

In September 2026, Avilés will also host the European regional meeting of the International Biennial Association, further strengthening the biennial’s international role and its position as a platform for contemporary artistic and ecological dialogue.
