The 12th edition of the Bucharest Biennale, the International Biennial for Contemporary Art, will take place from September 30 to October 18, 2026, across various venues throughout Bucharest, Romania. The 2026 edition is titled “Freiraum”, meaning “Free Space,” and explores the changing meaning of freedom within contemporary urban life, political realities, and artistic practice.
Organized by PAVILION — Centre for Contemporary Art and Culture under the direction of Răzvan Ion and Eugen Rădescu, the biennale brings together contemporary artists, curators, researchers, and cultural practitioners to examine questions surrounding freedom, public space, society, and political change.
Through exhibitions, artistic projects, installations, performances, and interdisciplinary programs, Bucharest Biennale 2026 encourages visitors to reconsider how freedom is experienced, negotiated, and represented in contemporary cities. The event provides an international platform for critical artistic dialogue while highlighting Bucharest as an important center for contemporary art and cultural exchange.
