Helsinki Biennial 2027

The fourth edition of the Helsinki Biennial will take place from June 6 to September 19, 2027, across Helsinki, Finland, under the theme “Unknowns.” Curated by Mami Kataoka and Arja Miller, the biennial will explore uncertainty, the unfamiliar, and the possibilities that emerge when we encounter what remains unknown.

The 2027 edition will bring together approximately 45 international and Finnish artists, presenting contemporary artworks and practices that encourage audiences to reflect on unexplored perspectives, changing environments, and the complex relationship between people, nature, and society.

The biennial will take place across three distinctive locations: Vallisaari Island, Esplanade Park, and HAM Helsinki Art Museum. The unique combination of an island environment, an urban public park, and a major art museum will create diverse settings for experiencing contemporary art and connecting artistic practices with the city and its surrounding landscape.

The first group of participating artists includes Ari Bayuaji, Tara Donovan, Laurent Grasso, Marguerite Humeau, Matias Karsikas, Britta Marakatt-Labba, Ragnhild May, Yoshitomo Nara, Josefina Nelimarkka, Tawatchai Puntusawasdi, Anna Retulainen, and Jakob Kudsk Steensen.

Through its international program and diverse exhibition locations, Helsinki Biennial 2027 will offer a platform for artistic experimentation and dialogue, inviting visitors to embrace uncertainty and consider the unknown as a space for discovery, imagination, and new possibilities.
