Wutopia Lab has completed the Flickering Peak Arts Centre in Hainan, China, wrapping its structures in translucent mesh informed by mosquito nets. The project is located in Coffee Village, Wanning, and was developed to transform a partially constructed arts centre into a landmark that responds to the region’s tropical climate.
“One Pool, Three Mountains” Design Concept
The design of Flickering Peak is inspired by the natural landscape of Hainan, with three block-like structures symbolizing “mountains” arranged around a small water pool. These abstract mountains reflect the island’s relationship to both mountains and the sea.
Wutopia Lab founder, Yu Ting, explained that the existing structural system limited the design possibilities, leading to the creation of box-like buildings. To transform them, Wutopia Lab wrapped the structures in a thin steel frame covered by perforated mesh, evoking the concept of “grey spaces” traditionally used in Chinese homes to protect against mosquitoes.
Terraces and Outdoor Platforms
The mesh membrane not only gives the buildings a mountain-like appearance but also provides shaded terraces on top of the blocks. These terraces serve as an extension of indoor spaces, blending indoor and outdoor environments.
Main Building and Interior Features
The central building houses the main events area, featuring amphitheatre-style marble seating, a vaulted ceiling reminiscent of a cave, and circular light fixtures. External bridges connect the main building to two smaller buildings on either side, which serve as office and dining areas.
Nighttime Illumination
At night, the translucent mesh creates a lantern-like effect, with the illuminated structures reflecting in the water, enhancing the building’s presence in the landscape.
