HABITAT BEYOND EARTH – The Mars Colony Dreamscape Challenge 2026
Competition Brief
Intent
The Habitat Beyond Earth Competition requires the contestants to create a conceptual model of a sustainable human colony on Mars. It will look for plans that not only deal with the problems of living on the Red Planet but also take into account the needs of the future residents. One of the aspects of the project is a habitat that can easily be modified and can even change with the community feeling of the inhabitants.
Purpose
The aim of the competition is to encourage architects to think of ways to live in the cosmos rather than on earth only, and hence very creative solutions for the earth’s future colonies will come up. The entrants will have to show how to manage scarcity of resources, how to produce energy, how to recycle waste, and how to create environments that are psychologically and socially uplifting all within a Martian context.
Requirements
Contestants will have to come up with a detailed plan for a living space for 50 people at least. The house design should consist of personal rooms, shared spaces, laboratories and workshops, schools and clinics, parks for plants, power supply and water systems, waste management, transport and communication means. The ideas should be mainly about Martian conditions sustainability, adaptability, and scalability.
Jury
The information available to the public does not give the names or the professional backgrounds of the jury members. The only description of the evaluation body is that there is a group of design and architecture experts.

✦ ArchUp Competition Review
The Habitat Beyond Earth competition is under the auspices of an unknown organization, and since the identities of jury members and their qualifications are not made public, this hampers the transparency around the evaluation and the level of expertise used. The competition is a professional and academic one, and it is not a case of coming up with the most attractive designs for promotional purposes; rather the competition is all about the coming up with the most sustainable, modular, and livable habitats for Mars. Prizes consist of money, publication, certificates, interviews, and memberships in the community, but these might not match perfectly to the sophisticated design process that is required. The participants mostly gain through the development of their portfolio and the exploratory speculation of space architecture, while the practical implementation on Mars stays a concept. The jury is vaguely referred to as design and architecture professionals, thus leaving the qualifications unproven.
Conclusion and Final Thoughts
In the end, the Habitat Beyond Earth challenge will be a great helix for architects to explore their fanciest dreams in space with the help of artificial intelligence which is a still large concern in the industry of construction and space exploration. At the same time, the absence of the jury’s public profile and the intricate structure of the fee might be interpreted as a drawback leading to uncertainty about the evaluation being transparent and the fees being set as expected. The competition is rich in concept and it would be best to regard it as a speculative design exercise or a chance to get one’s portfolio recognized rather than a guaranteed route to real construction or major professional accolades.
