Project Location and Integration with Nature
The Science Island Museum (Mokslo Sala) is located on Nemunas Island in Kaunas, Lithuania, occupying a total area of 15,000 square meters. This Kaunas building is designed to function as a key part of the island’s public infrastructure. The museum’s architecture follows the island’s natural topography, creating a seamless connection between the built environment and the surrounding landscape.
Interactive Roof: A Civic and Ecological Element
The museum’s roof performs multiple roles:
- It is covered with native vegetation to enhance environmental integration.
- Circular openings in the roof serve as public platforms and scenic viewpoints.
- The roof of this Kaunas building is accessible, encouraging public use as part of the surrounding park.
Above the main structure lies a sloped and reflective upper disk, which plays both visual and climatic roles:
“It reflects daylight into the interior during the day and emits artificial light at night, serving as a continuous visual presence within the urban fabric.”

Interior Layout: Functional and Harmonized with Nature
SMAR Architecture Studio divides the Kaunas building into two primary zones:
- Front of the House: Includes exhibition spaces and public areas.
- Back of the House: Hosts laboratories and administrative offices.
In contrast to traditional museum layouts, the designers also allow the service areas to receive natural light and enjoy views of the adjacent park, which supports a healthy and engaging working environment.
Environmental Awareness Through Design
The museum aims to raise environmental awareness by engaging visitors through spatial and climatic transitions:
- Visitors experience seasonal and atmospheric variations while moving through the interior of the Kaunas building.
- Material selection and spatial arrangement reinforce the museum’s focus on science, architecture, and nature.
“The design fosters a continuous dialogue between nature and scientific inquiry through interaction with light, weather, and landscape.”
