L A M P International Lighting Design Competition 2026

Competition Brief
L A M P International Lighting Design Competition 2026 is an open, independent competition inviting designers worldwide to submit original lighting concepts across four fixture subcategories and two experience levels. Now in its fourteenth year, the competition operates as a small, self-funded organisation channelling entry fees directly into prizes and finalist promotion. No pre-registration is required; designers submit through an online platform and are evaluated blindly by a five-member international jury.
The 2026 edition introduces a structural change: the former Manufactured category has been absorbed into Professional, leaving two primary tracks — Professional and Student. Within each track, four subcategories apply (Floor, Table, Pendant, Sconce), each eligible for up to eight additional designations recognising specific design qualities such as portability, sustainability, or acoustic performance. The competition accepts concept-stage work: sketches, renderings, and prototypes are all valid, meaning a design need not be production-ready to compete.
Intent
L A M P positions itself as a market-entry platform rather than a purely academic exercise. Finalist status carries a year-long dedicated feature on the competition website, promotion across media partner channels reaching a combined audience exceeding one million readers, and potential connection to manufacturing and retail opportunities. The organisation explicitly frames finalist recognition as a substitute for trade-show exposure — at a fraction of the cost. A People’s Choice online vote, live from 1 November 2026, adds a public dimension to the jury process.
Purpose
The competition targets emerging and established lighting designers who lack access to major industry platforms. By accepting concept-stage entries from any discipline — artists, architects, industrial designers — L A M P widens the field beyond specialist lighting professionals. An optional Jury Feedback Pack (available at checkout) provides written notes from the panel, structured around the prompt “what would strengthen this design,” delivered anonymously. This makes the competition useful as a development tool even for non-finalists.
AI Policy
AI-assisted visualisation tools are permitted within the rendering and presentation workflow. The underlying design concept, form, construction logic, and creative direction must originate entirely with the entrant. Entries whose core concept was generated by AI will be disqualified. Disclosure is mandatory in the entry form; a false or omitted disclosure results in disqualification at any stage, including after a finalist announcement, with no refund issued.
Registration Fees
No pre-registration is required. Entry fees are determined by submission date. All payments are processed online by credit card only via the Submittable platform.

The design need not be production-ready; concept-stage sketches, CAD renderings, and prototype photographs are all accepted. Each submission must fit one of four fixture subcategories and may claim one or more of eight additional designations if applicable.

A credible panel: it spans independent studio practice, curatorial authority, institutional design education, and large-scale industrial production — covering the full spectrum from concept to market.
Intellectual Property
Entrants retain full ownership of their designs at all times. By submitting, designers grant L A M P and its media partners a perpetual, royalty-free licence to reproduce submitted images and creative content in print and digital promotional material — with credit provided wherever possible. If L A M P directly facilitates a manufacturing agreement for a submitted design, a royalty arrangement is negotiated separately between the entrant, L A M P, and the relevant manufacturing or media partner. No rights to the design concept itself are transferred.
✦ ArchUp Competition Review
L A M P occupies a distinct and useful position in the design competition landscape: it is sector-specific, independently run, and explicitly market-oriented. The fee structure is tiered sensibly — a student entering at Early Bird pays $60, which is low for an international competition with genuine industry jury weight. The absorption of the Manufactured category into Professional simplifies the structure without disadvantaging either group. The mandatory AI disclosure policy is among the more carefully drafted in the field: permitting AI in visualisation while protecting conceptual authorship is a workable and intellectually honest position.
The primary limitation for international entrants is that specific cash prize amounts remain unpublished — the competition’s financial incentive is therefore difficult to assess before submitting. The image naming convention is unusually strict and a common disqualification trigger; participants should prepare file names before uploading. The jury brings genuine weight across interior design, curatorial practice, and industrial production. For lighting designers at any career stage seeking documented international exposure and potential manufacturing connections, this is a well-structured and low-barrier entry point.
