Share Your Story Workshop

d.talks Share Your Story workshop on June 24th, 6:30-8 p.m. is an opportunity for us to celebrate our sense of place as a means to rebuild community. In this workshop, we will extend our ongoing conversation on place and memory and turn our memories about place into mini stories.

The Share Your Story workshop is a writing workshop for non-writers, facilitated by d.talks committee members Veronica Briseno Castrejon, Sally El Sayed, Alfred Gomez, Joy Olagoke, Sasha Simic, and Sergio Veyzaga. No prior experience or preparation is required to participate. The only thing participants are asked to bring is an image, drawing or illustration of a place that inspires particular reflections for them. Questions that participants may be asked to consider include: Where is this place? Does it still exist? What aspects of the city/space erode or strengthen your connection to the memory? What does this place make you feel? For inspiration, participants are invited to view stories already shared with d.talks, available at http://www.dtalks.org/memories-3.

Share Your Story is conceived by d.talks volunteers in partnership with Advocates for Equitable Design Education, a student initiative at the University of Calgary, and Calgary Public Library. What started with conversations related to Land and Memory has evolved into parsing questions and distilling an idea to create a forum to share public memories of place. Land and Memory generated ideas: remember your roots, the soil below your feet, the energy around you. Share Your Story allows us to extend our inquiry into how buildings and landscapes impact and shape our memories. It gives us an opportunity to revisit and share our feelings, so that, together, we can be proud ambassadors of our cultural identity, contributing to the vibrant fabric of our cities.
