Marble and its uses in interior design,
Our modern marble adaptations have inspired fascination
with the ancient and semi-eternal material it is used to build the most beautiful architecture and statuary.
From the Taj Mahal to Michelangelo’s David and – of course – St. Petersburg’s Marble Palace,
it’s had its fair share of glory days.
Fortunately, the beauty and versatility of stone has not been lost on contemporary interior designers.
Here are our favorite ways to use marble in the home.

Marble countertops

Do as the ancients did and replace painted, wallpapered or carpeted surfaces with marbled ones.
The dark displays are moody and add intimacy while the pale marble foyer above (by Jean-Louis Deniot) is anything but luxurious.
The French designer uses the material vigorously in his Parisian home, covering the floor,
walls, and ceiling, giving a nod to ancient architecture.

Marble architectural features

Beautiful staircases, fireplaces, and built-in bathrooms instantly become so much larger when marble is thrown into the mix. Often every feature needs to make a statement so you don’t need to accessorize.
With elegantly sweeping balustrades,
this staircase by Kathryn Poley looks like a stairway to heaven
and needs nothing more than a tiered chandelier to draw gasps of admiration.

Marble furniture

The furniture has recently undergone a marble makeover,
as is the Kelly Wearstler-style living room by Cameron Diaz.
An example of how it can take center stage as a great anchor to a comfortable seating arrangement.
With marble tops, always remember to use coasters and blot up any spills –
some glass marbles are porous and prone to staining if left for too long.

Marble floors

Polished marble makes a great flooring choice for entryways and hallways,
where a circular table topped with a few key targets or a low urn of faux florals is a sophisticated choice.
Marble is very slippery, however, for densely packed areas, consider including a rug or runner.

Marble bathrooms

The classic all-marble range is the pinnacle of bathroom design,
as it is a great way to maintain a comfortable temperature after a steamy shower or bath and looks heavenly.
