Mecanoo & Meng Architects and LOLA Landscape win a competition to design the Guangming Scientist Valley,
Mecanoo, in collaboration with Meng Architects and LOLA Landscape Architects, has been selected
As winner of the Shenzhen Guangming Scientist Valley International Design Competition.
The aim of the project is to create a research and innovation facility that also engages a larger audience while integrating and coexisting with the natural surroundings.
The project includes an area of about 1.2 square kilometers strategically
located to serve the larger scientific community, from Guangdong to Hong Kong and Macau.
Shenzhen Guangming Scientist Valley is located in the middle of Lian Tang Reservoir and Luo Village Reservoir and the valley space between them.
Surrounded by mountains, forests and water bodies,
the location provides an ecological advantage for the Innovation Centre.
Where the competition highlighted the potential of the region through the concept of “scientific forest”,
What encouraged the teams to consider all elements of nature as part of development.

Design features
The winning proposal is centered around the concept of “Coexistence Valley”.
The guiding principle is the principle of “temporal restoration and selective construction”
and an understanding of the lasting effects of the intervention on its surroundings.
The plan thus includes a varied general program with three independent components:
Public loop, research center and natural oceanic layer.
The goal of the strategy, known as “1001 Forest Gardens”,
It is to promote cooperation between scientists and the general
public while encouraging balanced coexistence within the valley.
