Global architectural design firm Populous has been chosen to design a new mixed-use event arena in Munich, Germany.
The city council has given the green light to the new arena, which has a capacity of 20,000 people.
While the new arena is designed as a climate-neutral venue, it will be “Germany’s first climate-neutral event arena”, when completed.
Design Features
Populous, known as the world’s leading stadium architecture practice,
has been selected in a multi-stage architectural competition presided over by Professor Markus Allmann.
The design is being developed with Bavaria-based SWMUNICH Real Estate GmbH (SWMUNICH),
and the local developer will build and operate a world-class mixed-use concert and conference center.
The venue will serve as a multifunctional venue for concerts and conference center and accommodate up to 20,000 people.
Inspired by Bavarian heritage and character, Populous encases the venue in a three-dimensional skeletal skin,
referring to the diamond shape used on the Bavarian state flag.
A press release from Populous said: “This immediately and clearly links the arena to southern Germany and creates a huge appreciation factor.
The plaza’s structure means that visitors can see what’s inside the plaza,
and savor the entertainment that awaits them, even from a distance.
While the arena’s interiors, dubbed Multifunctional Concert and Conference Center (MUCcc),
are designed according to future artists’ requirements in terms of technology, stage performances and productions.
Countless thoughtful details have been added and tailored to meet the needs of artists,
organizers and visitors, as the venue aims to offer unparalleled concert and live experiences.
Design shape
The auditorium seating will be designed in a horseshoe shape (270 degrees), inside,
making the entire focus on the multifunctional stage.
The design will incorporate a combination of steeplechase seating,
modern technology and the expertise of acoustics, who have worked in opera houses and symphony halls.
Thus creating world-class experiences in concerts and live events,
the Technology and Innovation Center at Munich Airport is set to be located in a completely new green space,
next to the LabCampus, and there is currently no similar venue in the Munich metropolitan area.
The new arena aims to be a new cultural landmark in the region and boost tourism and the local economy.
The new event arena will be the first of its kind for Germany and will be built on the principles of climate neutrality.
This is thanks to life-cycle-based planning, with the aim of reducing the carbon footprint during construction and positive climate management in its operational phase.
And that several thousand solar panels on the roof of the stadium and around the site,
along with the possibility of geothermal energy and heating the area, will ensure the ability to generate the energy needed to operate the arena and supply it to the site.
