At Rotterdam’s Cube Houses, the front door sits beneath a room that seems to lean out over the pavement. Yellow walls slope towards the passer-by; windows look down as well as out. Above the entrances, one dwelling meets the next to make a broken canopy. The eye follows the cubes, but the architectural argument begins with the route underneath them.

Completed in 1984, Piet Blom’s Kubuswoningen brings housing and a pedestrian crossing into the same structure. Its larger subject is a familiar urban problem: how to build homes on a site already claimed by movement. Blom’s answer gives the dwelling a compact support and lets the neighbourhood continue around it. The resulting public space is as important to the project as its photographed roofline.

A neighbourhood across a traffic divide

The complex stands at the meeting of Rotterdam’s city centre and the Oude Haven, the old harbour. Its elevated promenade, Overblaak, crosses the Blaak traffic corridor. The commission therefore involved more than arranging houses on a plot: it required a connection between pieces of the city.

The Kijk-Kubus museum’s history records that Rotterdam’s municipal planners wanted this crossing in 1977, before Blom developed the design. That detail changes the reading of the project. The bridge was a civic requirement; the inhabited canopy was an architectural response. A necessary journey became the organising element of a neighbourhood.

Approaching the development from the harbour, the stacked layers remain legible: water and terraces, the pedestrian level, then the elevated dwellings. The adjacent buildings keep the composition tied to an ordinary city of apartments, shops and streets. The cubes gain their force from this contact with everyday surroundings.

How a repeated house becomes a collective place

Blom had already explored cube houses in Helmond. In Rotterdam, their grouping developed his metaphor of a forest: a narrow support acts as a trunk, the dwelling above as a crown. Seen together, the units give the pedestrian route a succession of edges, openings and overhead enclosures.

This approach belongs to Dutch Structuralism, with which Blom and his teacher Aldo van Eyck are associated. In accessible terms, the concern is how small, recognisable parts make a larger social setting. Repetition provides continuity; the spaces between the parts offer places for movement and encounter. A housing unit has a role in the street beyond the accommodation it contains.

The public realm here is distributed vertically. There is a road below the crossing, a promenade through the complex, and private living space above. Calling it simply an open ground floor misses this layered arrangement. The photograph beneath the concrete structure shows its other register: broad surfaces, supports and railings, where the expressive silhouette gives way to the practical work of carrying and directing movement.

What the tilted walls ask of the resident

Inside, the floors remain horizontal. It is the enclosure that inclines. The Kijk-Kubus describes a wall-to-floor angle of 53.5 degrees, explaining that the built form is a slightly flattened cube. The familiar shorthand of a house rotated by 45 degrees does not adequately describe the rooms.

Daily life rises through three principal levels: living and cooking spaces below, bedrooms and a bathroom above, then a smaller room beneath the apex. Windows on the lower faces connect the interior visually to the street; higher openings turn towards the sky. This progression makes looking out part of the section of the house.

The same geometry creates practical demands. Furniture must negotiate narrowing edges, and floor area alone tells a limited story about useful headroom. Storage, circulation and the position of a table become unusually consequential decisions. The steep stairs also matter: a home organised over several levels asks more of its occupants than a dwelling with step-free rooms on one floor. The museum itself acknowledges that living here requires adaptability.

These are questions familiar to small-home interior design: where can someone stand, move, sit or store possessions comfortably? At Kubuswoningen, the striking exterior makes those normally quiet negotiations visible.

Concrete support, timber enclosure

The apparent balancing act rests on a conventional division of structural tasks. Reinforced-concrete columns and floors carry a timber-framed enclosure, with fibre-cement panels and rock-wool insulation. The hexagonal support also accommodates access and storage. The house is assembled from different systems rather than made as a solid concrete cube.

Its windows form part of that assembly. Their downward and upward orientations affect the view and the detailing of the envelope; double glazing is one component of the separation between domestic life and the traffic outside. The yellow surface gives the group visual continuity, while joints, glazing and roof edges do the less conspicuous work of keeping the rooms habitable.

The building continues after the photograph

Maintenance makes the cost of the geometry tangible. In the roof renovation of 1997–1998, zinc covering was installed over the original shingles. The maintenance photograph shows a triangular working platform fitted around a cube: access for repair has to accommodate the building’s shape just as furniture does inside.

The promenade has also changed through renewed paving, lighting and planting. Such interventions belong to the architecture’s history. A collective place depends on repeated attention to shared surfaces, entrances and edges, as well as on the initial design. Plants beside a doorway can contribute to its everyday use without changing the overall composition.

A question Rotterdam is still asking

The relationship between buildings and public routes remains active in the city’s architectural debate. The proposed Rotterdam ROCKS vertical park also carries public movement through a three-dimensional composition, although with a different programme and environmental ambition. Reading it alongside Kubuswoningen shifts attention from unusual shapes to the journeys those shapes make possible.

Blom’s project offers a demanding precedent. Density can coexist with a recognisable pedestrian setting, but this does not make every room easy to furnish or every route easy to access. Its strongest lesson lies in that tension. The visitor receives an open passage and a memorable overhead landscape; the resident inhabits the spatial compromises that sustain it. Both experiences belong in the assessment of the building.
