Named Chengdu Science Fiction Museum, Zaha Hadid Architects has completed a 59,000-square-metre area museum in Chengdu, China that is shaped like an expanding nebula cloud with a star at its center. This museum overlooks the Jingrong Lake and is situated within the Science and Innovation New City of Chengdu’s Pidu District, surrounded by mountain ranges and forests. Chengdu is a city well-known for launching the careers of Chinese science fiction authors in the past 5 decades and it is renowned for its unique local traditions and culture. With 20 million inhabitants, Chengdu is a major research and innovation center in Southwest China.
At the heart of the museum is a sky-lit central atrium and wide window that provides a fantastic view of the Xiling Mountain and allows for a strong connection between the building’s interiors and its natural environment. The museum contains exhibition galleries, a multi-function hall, a conference center and other ancillary spaces and it has achieved 3-Star Green Building standards from China’s Green Building Program. Moreover, digital modelling analyses were applied in the design process in order to maximize efficiency in composition, site conditions, solar irradiation and structural considerations.
