Serpentin: a bench awakening the curiosity الثعبان: مقعد يوقظ الفضول

Marc Hoogendijk creates Serpentin. A wooden indoor bench that appears to be one continuous piece of wood creates its volume.

Fuelled with curiosity and a wish to surprise the viewer, Sweden-based freelance furniture designer Marc Hoogendijk skillfully crafts ‘Serpentin’. An alluring wooden indoor bench gives the impression of a continuous piece of wood spun to form its volume.

His process is brilliantly characterized by thorough research and development. Where technology and design combine together beautifully giving life to extraordinary playful objects.

“My design challenges conventional notions of what a product should look like and it speaks to the user on both. An intellectual and aesthetic level.

Furthermore, the Serpentin bench is based on a methodology that I call Technomimicry. This mimics functions of human-made objects and seamlessly applies these findings on the furniture I create” says Hoogendijk.

Moreover, this eye-catching fascinating piece of furniture has inspired by the paper tube construction. A continuous strip of paper wrapped rotation after rotation around the tube.

Inviting one to sit in comfort and simply enjoy innovation and craftsmanship. Its shape embodying a warm Scandinavian feel is sure to spark conversation about its construction.

With its eclectic swirling form, at first glance, the eye can see a sleek strip of wood winding around the bars of a wooden frame.

To awaken the curiosity of the user, the ends of the strip are further hanging loosely draped over the frame.
“The forces in the wood and the wood fibers have been curbed to a softness and almost plastic shape and the frame in its simplicity and contrast additionally highlights the seat’s silhouette – Serpentin’s characteristic idea” Hoogendijk adds.
