Sphere Entertainment, in collaboration with the Abu Dhabi Department of Culture and Tourism (DCT), has revealed plans to construct a new spherical venue in the UAE. This will be the second iteration of the dome-like Sphere, following the iconic structure in Las Vegas.

The Abu Dhabi Sphere is set to match the scale of its Las Vegas counterpart, which stands 112 meters tall and has a seating capacity of 20,000 people. While no architectural firm has been officially appointed to design the venue, it is worth noting that Populous, a firm specializing in stadium design, created both the Las Vegas Sphere and a proposed similar venue in London.

Expanding the Sphere’s Global Vision

Sphere Entertainment has long envisioned creating a network of similar venues around the world. The Abu Dhabi venue marks the first step toward this global expansion.

“The vision for Sphere has always included a global network of venues, and today’s announcement represents a significant milestone toward realizing that goal,” explained Sphere Entertainment’s executive chairman, James L. Dolan.

He added, “Sphere is transforming live entertainment, and we are excited to partner with DCT Abu Dhabi to bring this revolutionary venue to their city.”

No Timeline or Location Disclosed

At this stage, no specific location or construction timeline has been revealed for the Abu Dhabi Sphere. The team has indicated that DCT Abu Dhabi will pay Sphere Entertainment a franchise initiation fee, which grants the rights to build and manage the venue.

Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, chairman of DCT Abu Dhabi, shared his enthusiasm, stating, “Sphere Abu Dhabi will combine advanced technology with compelling storytelling, offering visitors unforgettable experiences.”

Al Mubarak emphasized that the project aligns with Abu Dhabi’s Tourism Strategy 2030, helping to establish the city as a hub for both culture and innovation. “By embracing forward-thinking entertainment like Sphere, we’re raising our international profile and setting new standards for immersive cultural experiences,” he said.

Canceled London Plans

This announcement comes after Sphere Entertainment decided to withdraw its proposal for a London Sphere earlier this year, citing the complexities of the planning process. Initially approved, the London project was later blocked by the city’s mayor, Sadiq Khan, leading the company to abandon the venture. The proposal had sparked debate, with some questioning whether London needed such a venue.
