American furniture manufacturer Steelcase and the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation have introduced two new collections of furniture inspired by designs from Frank Lloyd Wright’s late residential projects.

Collection Details

The Rockford collection draws from Wright’s designs, specifically referencing pieces used in the Laurent house, a project Wright designed for a mobility-impaired veteran and his wife. This collection includes armchairs, a small table, and nesting stools. The armchairs are low-slung with short, solid arms to aid in ease of use. The table features a plywood construction with beveled edges and a triangular top, reflecting Wright’s interest in adapting industrial materials for residential use.

The Galesburg collection expands on Wright’s built-in banquet seating from his Usonian homes. It includes armchairs and a sofa with upholstery that cantilevers over a wooden base with bullnose edges. Design modifications include more substantial arms and welts that echo Wright’s architectural forms. The sofa also features an ottoman that can be attached to create a chaise lounge.

Design Philosophy

Steelcase selected these designs to highlight Wright’s ability to adapt industrial materials, like plywood, for domestic settings. The updated furniture maintains Wright’s material choices while modernizing the designs for current consumer needs.
