The use of solid stone and wooden structures in the design of a Chinese resort,

Chinese architecture bureau, Penda China, designed and built a resort using solid stone and wood structures.

The two elements were used on the second floor, to refer to the characteristics of southern and northern folk houses in China.

With an area of 1,700 square meters, the Mentougou District, Xidamo Village, Qingshui City, Beijing, was chosen as the resort’s location.

The resort was called the In S&N Resort, as the office converted the originally built condominium into a new program.

By applying local building methods and materials, evoking traditional patterns, led by lead designers Sun Dayong and Wan Shuyan.

The first floors were designed with massive stone structures, and the second floors were built with wooden structures.

The project Location

Architects described the project site as a stream that flows gently down a mountain and passes through the middle of the site, and a massive stone pillow in the river.

Project emphasizes brutality” and “luxury”, given the nature of the site and the new construction.

The new resort offers a place for people who want to escape from their daily urban routine,

relax during holidays, and return their body and mind to nature.

Design Features

The new resort is designed in the form of two-storey buildings, built in harmony with the water,

where each room can overlook the landscape, creating a dialogue between man and nature.

The overall design and planning both reflect the look of the surrounding village,

closely linking the architecture with the context of the site, and the design,

villages and the natural surroundings being organically integrated.

Design materials

The general architectural form oscillates with the vicissitudes of the mountain,

the construction logic was the combination of different characteristics of southern and northern folk houses in China.

Not far from the site, there is a famous residential settlement called “Kuan”, an iconic stone housing model in northern China.

Therefore, the solid foundation of the building, made of brick and stone,

and the wooden structure on the second floor is inspired by the architectural structure of Naxi folk houses in southern Yunnan Province.

In the modern context, the styles of folk houses can be combined and grafted flexibly,

breaking the boundaries of time and space to form a new composition of the forms of folk houses.

The design takes advantage of the new configuration in several ways,

and the solid stone structure at the bottom not only keeps out moisture and stabilizes the foundation,

but also organically integrates the building with the site environment, giving the building a sense of growth.

To fully embody the concept of organic architecture, stone building materials were selected around the site, and hand-built by local craftsmen was also involved.

The building also fully reflects the regional characteristics and spirit of the site, forming unity and continuity with the context.

The sloping roof echoes the shapes of the traditional apartment buildings,

creating a serene ambiance for the hotel.

The two-storey building is based on a light and flexible wooden structure, while at the same time building a natural and livable interior space.

Using a combination of wood and stone application, the space enriches with layers of fun qualities.

Programs and Activities

Connected by a bridge, the hotel lobby and guest rooms both face each other across the water,

allowing guests to fully experience the attractive natural environment as they enter the site.

The resort offers 24 guest rooms, including waterfront rooms and rooms with balconies,

while the design maximizes the great views around the site and makes the building an integral part of the environment.

While the terraces are designed as platforms for guests to chat, drink tea and enjoy the beautiful scenery, within a natural environment.

The infinity-edge pool in the hotel’s courtyard is ideal for the hot summer.

Inside, the hotel rooms’ wide French windows surround the beautiful exterior, including red brick,

blue waters and green mountains in a vivid palette.

Some of the hotel’s interior walls are decorated with exposed stone, highlighting the uniqueness of the generous space and creating a low-key yet vibrant setting.

The elaborate design and placement of artwork within the building also reflects the taste of oriental aesthetics,

in such organized spaces, that people instantly become calm and open.

At night, the lighting of the hotel building and the lighting of the landscape corridor naturally complement each other,

creating a pleasant holiday environment that makes people spend a long time.

The hotel exudes a sense of calm, comfort and relaxation from the inside out,

with babbling streams and beautiful mountain views, explaining the ultimate romance of wild luxury.

and an expression of people’s longing to embrace nature.

While the elevation of the ground level creates a good place to watch the clouds,

sunrise and sunset, smell the flowers, listen to the forest winds and see the stars,

In the lush summer, it is a rare resort for hiking in the mountains along the streams,

while in the colorful autumn, the flowers bloom as softly as they fall in the courtyard.

In the white winter, red plum blossoms spurted out from the white snow, and at last a place of pure nature was found in a remote and quiet village.
