Various Associates designed a boutique fashion store for a leading multi-brand fashion supplier SND in Taikoo Li Qiantan, Shanghai, China.

The 136-square-meter store is named after SND Taikoo Li Qiantan,

It is inspired by the ancient temples remaining in the deserts,

with the aim of creating spatial aesthetics rather than a pretty appearance.

The interiors feature a gray color palette and layered surfaces that envelope the entire store.

The design practice believes that good design not only needs to support the operation of space,

convey emotion and brand personality,

but also rooted in cities and influencing local culture.

Despite the limited spatial scale, t

he store exudes a unique identity and sits majestically in one of Shanghai’s most thriving shopping destinations.

It conveys the brand’s independent attitude of not going with the flow and not defining itself according to common standards.

The site is approximately 136 square metres,

and is packed with a boutique fashion store offering products from several hundred brands.

The ceiling height of the original space was relatively appropriate.

The store should be open to the shopping center from the inside and the windows should face the outside.

Depending on the conditions of the site,

Various Associates have created a space with a sense of layering, architecture and art.

To continue the other store genes they engineered for SND.

Design features

For this purpose, the design team created several layers of beams suspended in space.

which was inspired by the rough, weathered textures and ramshackle aesthetics of ancient temples in the deserts.

Simple and strong structural relationships on the horizontal and vertical levels ensure the transparency of the space, and also strengthen its sense of depth and the priority system for displaying the goods.

Beams and columns on each layer visually expand the space by making full use of the height differences.

Besides, pipes and equipment are skillfully arranged and hidden in beams and columns,

which is a great difficulty for the project.

Formal design meets functional requirements, follows a coherent logic,

and takes structural aesthetics as expressions.

Which results in a space that combines rationality and sensitivity.

For the material scheme, a light-colored rough paint is applied,

which is reminiscent of the beige cobblestones of Europe.

In addition, the very thin stone veneer of the suspended beams shows textural contrast,

offering a rough and rough feel with soft faded colours.

It creates an organized sense of layering that runs through the public space.

Layered structures at different heights guide people’s line of sight to provide a comfortable visual experience.

At the same time transforming the originally complex ceiling system equipped with electrical and mechanical pipelines into a feature and highlight of the space.
