Competition Brief

The Architecture MasterPrize (AMP) is an annual international award recognizing design excellence across architecture, interior design, landscape architecture, architectural product design, and architectural photography. Based in Los Angeles, the AMP was formerly known as the AAP Architecture Prize and has been operating for over a decade, accumulating a winners archive that includes globally recognized firms from over 81 countries.

The 2026 edition is currently open. The extended early entry deadline is 30 April 2026. Past winners include Zaha Hadid Architects, Renzo Piano Building Workshop, Tadao Ando, David Chipperfield Architects, Steven Holl, BIG, Snøhetta, KPF, SOM, Safdie Architects, Kengo Kuma, and Heatherwick Studio, among many others. The biennial winners gala is scheduled for 24 November 2026 at the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, by invitation only.

Intent

The AMP was created to advance the appreciation and exposure of quality architectural design worldwide. It operates as an international recognition platform that evaluates projects based on design excellence, environmental considerations, cultural and contextual awareness, originality, innovation, practicality, sustainability practices, and fulfillment of functional requirements.

The competition accepts completed, in-progress, and conceptual projects. Finished projects must have been completed within the past five years. Projects do not need to be built or located in any specific country. Both professional and student entries are accepted across all programs.

Purpose

Winners receive commercial rights to use the AMP Winner’s Seal on promotional materials, a profile in the online directory, feature in the Book of Architecture, and an online Certificate of Achievement. Design of the Year finalists additionally receive the AMP trophy and a press campaign directed to architecture professionals, press, and potential clients worldwide. Winners have no additional fees to access their resources — everything is available through the AMP account portal.

Requirements

Entries are submitted online through the AMP registration system. Each submission requires a lead architect or designer name, project name, category selection, and a project description of up to 600 characters for public display plus an optional jury-only box. Up to 10 images may be submitted (JPEG or PNG, minimum 1000px on longest side, max 4MB each) and one PDF in A4 or Letter format. Entries submitted to multiple categories receive a 30% discount on additional categories, provided it is the exact same project with the same text and images. Entries are not anonymous — firm names and logos may be included.

Jury

The jury is a multi-disciplinary panel of leading industry professionals drawn from architecture, interior design, art, journalism, architectural photography, and education globally. The judging process runs in multiple stages using a custom online voting system:

  1. Initial Review — Editors review all entries to ensure completeness before judging begins.
  2. Official Selection / Honorable Mentions — Editors and expert jurors select a longlist (the AMP Official Selection).
  3. Winners Selection — Jurors assigned by expertise score projects on design excellence, originality, innovation, sustainability, and practicality. Sub-category winners selected.
  4. Best of Best Selection — Highest-scored entries across all categories receive the Best of Best title.
  5. Design of the Year Selection — Jury nominates top three favorites from Best of Best entries per discipline. Entry with highest nominations per main category wins Design of the Year and receives the AMP trophy.

✦ ArchUp Competition Review

The Architecture MasterPrize has built a credible track record over more than a decade by attracting genuine participation from globally recognized firms including Zaha Hadid Architects, Renzo Piano, Tadao Ando, BIG, Snøhetta, and SOM. This caliber of participation distinguishes it from many commercial online award platforms that have no documented history of peer-level firm engagement. The multi-stage jury process, including a final Design of the Year selection by jury nomination, introduces an additional layer of editorial curation beyond simple scoring. The five-program structure covering architecture, interiors, landscape, product, photography, and Firm of the Year is comprehensive and allows participation across different dimensions of a firm’s practice. The bi-annual gala at the Guggenheim Bilbao is a substantive event that gives the award a physical presence and prestige anchor that most online recognition platforms lack. The fee structure is transparent and the 25% early entry discount running through 30 April 2026 provides meaningful savings on what are otherwise mid-range fees for the category: 375€ standard for architecture is competitive relative to comparable international awards of similar standing. The lack of cash prizes is consistent with the category and not unusual at this level. The absence of anonymous judging means firm names can be included, which is a practical advantage for established practices. For architects and designers seeking a credible international award citation with a verifiable winners archive, prestigious past participants, and a physical gala venue, the AMP represents one of the stronger options available in the international open-entry award landscape.

Final Thoughts

The Architecture MasterPrize occupies a credible middle ground in the international award landscape: more substantive and transparent than purely commercial recognition platforms, and more accessible than institutionally exclusive or regionally restricted competitions. The winners archive spanning 81+ countries, the Guggenheim Bilbao gala, and the participation of leading global firms give it a professional standing that practitioners can cite with confidence.

The 41 categories across architecture, interior design, and landscape architecture make this accessible to a wide range of project types. The student program at significantly reduced fees (76€) gives emerging practitioners an accessible entry point. The multi-category discount (30% on additional categories for the same project) makes strategic multi-category submission financially viable.

With the extended early entry deadline at 30 April 2026, practitioners have a narrow remaining window to benefit from the 25% discount before fees revert to standard pricing in June. Final deadline is 31 August 2026.
