Competition Brief

The Architecture of Play 2026–27 is the seventh edition of a kindergarten design challenge organised by MindRain, an independent academic platform running architecture and design competitions since 2016. The brief asks undergraduate design students to reimagine learning environments for children aged three to six, treating corridors, courtyards, and walls as active tools for discovery rather than passive circulation.

Purpose

The competition is structured in two parallel categories rather than sequential stages. Category 1 (1st–2nd year students) requires hand-drafted submissions; Category 2 (3rd–5th year students) allows digital work. Requirements

The design must include learning spaces, creative and play spaces, interaction/multipurpose spaces, support spaces (administration, dining, health, storage), and an outdoor learning area. Participants choose their own site anywhere in their city, state, or country — urban, rural, or coastal — provided it supports the proposed program. Submission consists of up to 6 A2 landscape boards compiled into a single PDF, maximum 35MB. Category 1 boards must be hand-drafted; Category 2 may be digital. No names, logos, or identifying information may appear on the boards — only a MIND ID issued after registration. Video submissions are not accepted as part of judged material, though an optional promotional video may be uploaded separately by 10 January 2027.

Jury

Registration Fees

Fees vary by nationality, entry type, and whether participants opt into monetary-award eligibility (Group A) or exposure-only participation (Group B, Indian nationals only).

Groups of 30 or more participants from the same institution qualify for a 35% flat discount, requested by faculty or staff via official university email. Group B (non-monetary track) is restricted to Indian nationals; International applicants are only eligible under the monetary Group A track.

Prizes and Rewards

Total prize fund: ₹50,000, plus 20+ Honorable Mentions. Monetary awards apply exclusively to Group A entrants. All participants receive a certificate of participation; honorable mentions receive a certificate of appreciation; winners receive a certificate of achievement. Selected entries may also be featured on MindRain’s YouTube channel and Instagram page.
