Ateljé Lyktan and Snøhetta: Sustainable Office Lamp

Norwegian studio Snøhetta, renowned for its innovative and sustainable design approach, has joined forces with lighting brand Ateljé Lyktan to introduce a groundbreaking office lamp called Superdupertube. This collaboration merges Snøhetta’s expertise in architectural design with Ateljé Lyktan’s mastery in lighting technology to create a modern luminaire that pays homage to its predecessor while embracing sustainable materials and production methods.

A Contemporary Take on Iconic Design

The Superdupertube lamp is a contemporary reinterpretation of Ateljé Lyktan’s iconic Supertube, originally crafted from extruded aluminium in the 1970s. Snøhetta partner Jenny B Osuldsen explained that while the Supertube had ceased production around 2010, it remained an iconic piece albeit somewhat forgotten. Recognizing its timeless appeal and functional design, Snøhetta sought to revive the Supertube by giving it a sustainable makeover.

Sustainable Material Selection

The decision to use hemp bioplastic for the Superdupertube was driven by a desire to minimize its carbon footprint and embrace renewable materials. Hemp, known for its durability and sustainability, emerged as the ideal choice for the lamp’s construction. Through a meticulous process of material exploration and experimentation, Snøhetta and Ateljé Lyktan arrived at the hemp bioplastic composite, which blends hemp fibers with polylactic acid (PLA) derived from sugarcane, wood cellulose, and minerals. This eco-friendly composite is not only renewable but also fossil- and gas-free, aligning perfectly with the lamp’s sustainable ethos.

Circular Design Principles

The Superdupertube lamp embodies a holistic approach to sustainable design, from its material composition to its end-of-life considerations. It can be industrially composted or recycled, underscoring its commitment to circularity and resource efficiency. While the lamp’s design is rooted in sustainability, it doesn’t compromise on functionality or aesthetics. With its sleek and timeless design, the Superdupertube seamlessly integrates into modern office environments. Thus, providing both ambient illumination and architectural allure.

Innovative Features

One of the distinctive features of the Superdupertube is its twisted louvres, which serve both aesthetic and functional purposes. These louvres help diffuse the light and minimize glare, creating a comfortable and conducive workspace environment. Additionally, the lamp’s organic beige color, derived from the natural hue of hemp, adds a touch of warmth and character to any space. Each lamp bears a unique pattern, reflecting the inherent variability of natural materials and the environmental conditions in which they are cultivated.

Pioneering Collaboration

Beyond its environmental benefits, the Superdupertube represents a milestone for Snøhetta as it marks the studio’s first foray into office lighting design. Building on their previous collaboration on The 7th Room, a suspended cabin nestled among the treetops. Snøhetta and Ateljé Lyktan continue to push the boundaries of sustainable design. Therefore, demonstrating that innovation and environmental stewardship can go hand in hand.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the Superdupertube lamp exemplifies the transformative power of sustainable design. Thus, offering a compelling vision for a more eco-conscious future. By reimagining a classic design through the lens of sustainability, Snøhetta and Ateljé Lyktan have created a luminaire that not only illuminates. But also inspires, proving that beauty and sustainability are not mutually exclusive. As we strive towards a more sustainable world, the Superdupertube serves as a shining example of how design can make a positive impact on both the planet and people’s lives.
