Competition Brief

The Canadian Creators Collective (CCC) has launched the CCC Emerging Design Awards 2026, a new award dedicated to recognizing outstanding young designers based in Canada. Open from May 1 to June 30, 2026, the award is structured around four design categories and targets both individual practitioners and design teams in the early stages of their careers. Applicants must be based in Canada and must have no more than six years of professional practice. Students currently enrolled in a university-level program in architecture, design, or a related discipline are also eligible, including those graduating in 2026. Submissions are made through the Fourwaves online platform and must include work samples, a written questionnaire, and a photo and bio of the designer or team. A total of six awards will be given across categories.

Intent

The CCC Emerging Design Awards respond directly to a gap identified through in-depth conversations with established Canadian design studios: the absence of meaningful, well-timed catalysts for designers at the early stages of their careers. The award aims to give young creators a credible platform to present their work to the broader design community, connect with industry professionals, and gain recognition that can open doors to grants, residencies, international competitions, and employment opportunities. The CCC sees industry-recognized validation as a practical tool for career advancement, not simply an honorific.

Purpose

The award is designed to function as a professional accelerator. By exposing winning and finalist work through the CCC’s national media partner network and distributing a press kit via the v2com newswire, the award delivers visibility at a scale that emerging designers would rarely achieve independently. Beyond media exposure, the award connects participants to a community of peers and established practitioners, and provides category winners with concrete professional benefits including exhibition opportunities and platform access. The CCC’s goal is to strengthen the ecosystem for design in Canada by ensuring talented young creators receive the recognition and resources they need to grow.

Requirements

All entrants must be based in Canada with no more than six years of professional practice. Canadian citizens practicing primarily outside Canada are not eligible. Submissions are accepted in English and French only. Each submission may include up to twelve images, portfolio links, and a written component. In the Form-Giving category, only realized work is accepted and renders or AI-generated images are strictly prohibited. In all other categories, renders and AI-generated images are permitted but must be declared. The CCC recommends submitting existing best work rather than creating new work specifically for the award. Multiple entries are technically accepted but not recommended, as the award celebrates the designer as a body of practice rather than individual projects. Proof of eligibility will be requested from all finalists.

Jury

The award is judged by a five-member international jury composed of design professionals and industry support figures from media and public relations, practicing across Italy, France, the United Kingdom, South Korea, the United States, and Mexico. The jury members are Philippe Malouin (Canada and United Kingdom), Anna Caradeuc (Italy, France, and USA), Kwangho Lee (South Korea), Laura May Todd (Canada and Italy), and Manuel Bano (Spain and Mexico). A pre-selection panel drawn from the CCC Board reviews all entries before passing qualifying submissions to the international jury. Five finalists per category and five student finalists are then vetted for eligibility before final decisions are made. Applicants who identify a conflict of interest after jury members are announced may contact the CCC for a refund. Jury decisions are final.

✦ ArchUp Competition Review

The CCC Emerging Design Awards 2026 arrives as a genuinely needed addition to Canada’s design recognition landscape. What distinguishes it from many emerging talent awards is its deliberate structure: four well-differentiated categories that span physical making, spatial design, digital and systems thinking, and speculative research. That last category, Future-Building, is particularly welcome. It creates space for designers whose most significant work exists at the intersection of material investigation and conceptual proposition, work that routinely gets excluded from competitions anchored purely in built output.

The international jury is the award’s strongest asset. The five members bring credibility across different design cultures and geographies, and the inclusion of media and PR professionals alongside practitioners signals that the CCC understands what emerging designers actually need: not just peer recognition but informed visibility. The Form-Giving category rule prohibiting renders and AI images is a principled decision that will sharpen the quality of submissions in that track. The entry fee is reasonable, and the absence of any additional charges for trophies or certificates reflects a transparent, applicant-first approach that is not always standard in this sector. The main limitation is the lack of a cash prize, which means the award’s value is primarily reputational and relational rather than financial. For designers at the right stage of their career, that may be precisely what is most useful.

Conclusion

The CCC Emerging Design Awards 2026 is a professionally serious and well-conceived initiative that fills a genuine gap in the Canadian design ecosystem. Its international jury, multi-category structure, and media distribution infrastructure give it real reach and credibility for a first-edition award. Emerging Canadian designers and design teams with up to six years of practice and strong existing work are encouraged to submit before the June 30, 2026 deadline. The award offers more than recognition: it offers a point of entry into a national and international professional network at a critical moment in a young designer’s career.
