Introduction to the Project
Delugan Meissl Associated Architects (DMAA), an Austrian architectural studio, has reimagined a disused steelworks in Shanghai, China, creating the Expo Cultural Park Greenhouse. This innovative design features a striking collection of curved glass pavilions and integrates industrial remnants into an architectural landmark.
The greenhouse stands as a 35-meter-tall centerpiece in the newly opened southern section of Shanghai’s Expo Park. It occupies a site previously home to a coal-fired power plant and steelworks, transformed as part of the 2010 Expo Park redevelopment.
Design and Structure
The greenhouse spans 41,000 square meters, utilizing the steel grid of the former industrial factory as its structural base. DMAA incorporated glass, steel, and aluminum forms into a design that seamlessly blends natural curves with the site’s rigid industrial grid.
Roman Delugan, the studio’s founder, emphasized the organic geometries that interact with, but never compromise, the original steel framework. This contrast between rigidity and fluidity reflects the Chinese yin-yang philosophy, embodying harmony between industry and nature.
Pavilions and Themes
The Expo Cultural Park Greenhouse comprises three climate-themed pavilions and an entrance building.
- Desert Pavilion: Simulates an arid environment with artificial dunes and canyons, housing drought-resistant plants such as the towering saguaro cactus.
- Tropical Rainforest Pavilion: Features lush vegetation, swamps, and waterfalls, creating an immersive rainforest experience.
- Flower Garden Pavilion: Combines floral displays with flexible spaces for exhibitions, showcasing plants like the baobab “tree of life” and the upas tree.
Natural ventilation systems are integrated into the tropical and flower garden pavilions, while the desert pavilion features controlled air inlets to manage the climate.
Visitor Experience
Visitors explore the greenhouse through pathways and terraces, offering panoramic views of the surrounding park and adjacent lake. The site’s artificial hills, planted with 7,000 trees and cascading waterfalls, enhance the natural ambiance of the park.
Historical Context and Expansion
The Expo Cultural Park began its transformation in 2017, with its northern section opening in 2021. This southern expansion further integrates cultural and environmental elements into Shanghai’s urban fabric.
Architectural Legacy
Founded in 1993, Delugan Meissl Associated Architects has established a reputation for innovative and context-sensitive designs. Beyond the greenhouse, the studio has gained attention for its work on projects such as Taiyuan’s botanical garden complex and involvement in urban planning for The Line megacity.
