Design Features

The A$344 million ‘Modern Sydney’ project will open on Saturday 3 December 2022.

The project is located in a wonderful location overlooking Sydney Harbour,

and will be the new expansion of the Art Gallery, one of Australia’s preeminent cultural institutions.

The modern Sydney project, Australia, is the first project of the Pritzker Prize-winning practice of SANAA Architects,

led by Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa.

The new expansion of the Art Gallery of New South Wales is the largest cultural development in the city to open after the Yorn Utzon designed Sydney Opera House in 1973.

SANAA’s transformation will create a new art museum campus,

by designing two buildings connected to a public art park adjacent to the existing gallery.

Project contents

The modern Sydney project will feature teaching studios,

a private multimedia studio and a rooftop art terrace overlooking the city’s Sydney Harbour.

The main features of the expansion will be the exceptional displays of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art which will be displayed in a dedicated gallery.

It is the first that visitors encounter at the entrance level of the new building,

as well as across the entire expanded campus.

SANAA will nearly double the exhibition space with the modern Sydney project,

including a stunning new building designed by Japanese architects Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa with Australian practice.

Architectus will also work in Australia and New Zealand as the executive engineer on the project.

Australian architects, Tonkin Zulaikha Greer, will lead the revitalization of the historic building,

including the complete reinstallation of the ensemble.

It includes extensive outdoor art experiments,

and a series of major art commissions across campus by leading international and Australian artists.

SANAA will also create a series of artistic pavilions that are light,

transparent and open to its perimeter, scaling towards the port, in response to the site’s topography.

The new building expands the official exhibition area from 9,000 square meters to 16,000 square meters.

While it will contain galleries specifically designed to accommodate 21st century art,

as well as private installations in public spaces.

The project also includes a vast underground art space, which has been repurposed from a decommissioned World War II offshore oil tank.
