Features of the New Terminal

The terminal includes 19 gates along with spacious interiors offering modern passenger amenities. The design introduces more open waiting areas and outdoor check-in services, reflecting current global trends in airport architecture.

The project also added around eight kilometers of new roads and bridges, together with a large parking facility accommodating thousands of vehicles. These upgrades enhance accessibility and streamline the overall flow of movement to and from the airport.

Future Expansion Plans

This terminal represents the first phase of a comprehensive development program that will significantly expand the airport’s capacity in the coming years. Once complete, the facility will feature about 30 gates distributed over multiple levels, a central security checkpoint, modern departure lounges, and advanced baggage handling systems.

Upcoming phases will also introduce distinctive architectural elements such as a luminous wave wall and curated artworks, along with open-air dining areas overlooking the city skyline, blending functionality with aesthetic appeal.

✦ ArchUp Editorial Insight

The article highlights the opening of the new passenger terminal at San Diego International Airport as part of a broader architectural expansion. The visuals emphasize spacious interiors, contemporary material choices, and a composition defined by glass transparency and fluid lines. Yet the narrative leans heavily on visual qualities without fully addressing sustainability or the spatial dynamics of circulation, raising questions about its adaptability to long-term growth. Still, the emphasis on enhancing passenger experience offers a constructive dimension, positioning the project as a step toward redefining airport architectural identity.
