“Patch,” a modular sofa system designed by Chris Martin for the furniture company Massproductions, exudes a sense of warmth, hospitality, informality, and opulence. Martin is a co-founder of the company, which he established with Magnus Eleback nearly 15 years ago.

The distinctive backrest panels of Patch give it its defining appearance, while its construction technique reduces the reliance on polyurethane foam by utilizing steel springs commonly found in the bedding industry and introducing innovative corner designs.

According to the designer, the use of pocket springs instead of a large amount of foam resulted in resource conservation. Also, enhanced comfort compared to traditional foams and webbing straps. The springs provide a buoyant sensation without any areas of reduced support.

The design of the sofa is influenced by an inverted duffle bag, moc toe boots, and a chain of sausages. All of which add to its unique design language. The sofa stands out with its striking diamond-shaped “patches.”

Patch’s unique character comes from the softening effect of the top panels’ rounded shapes on the large volumes of the seating and backrest modules.

According to Chris Martin, the most important aspect of a sofa system is that it should be a welcoming and cozy place where one can relax and spend time with loved ones and acquaintances. He believes that this feeling has been successfully captured in Patch, which offers endless possibilities for customization.
