Home » Competitions » Warming Huts V.2025: An Arts + Architecture Competition on Ice

Warming Huts V.2025 is an innovative competition that invites architects, designers, and artists to submit their designs for warming huts or art installations along the Nestaweya River Trail in Winnipeg, Manitoba. This competition seeks to blend art and architecture, challenging participants to create structures that not only provide shelter but also integrate beautifully with the icy landscape of the Assiniboine and Red rivers. Winning entries will be placed at The Forks, a historic and bustling meeting place located at the confluence of the two rivers in downtown Winnipeg.

Location and Background

The Forks is a popular destination in Winnipeg, attracting over four million visitors annually. The Nestaweya River Trail, which runs along the Red and Assiniboine rivers, is an integral part of this area, providing a scenic route for winter activities like skating, skiing, and walking. Serving as a link between communities, the trail offers an alternative route to downtown and features regular grooming and enhanced safety measures, including extra security at night.

Design Challenges and Expectations

Winnipeg’s winter conditions pose unique challenges for designers, with temperatures often plummeting below –30°C in January and February. Participants are encouraged to consider the impact of solar radiation, wind chill, and the dynamic, snow-covered landscape when creating their designs. The depth of the ice on the rivers can reach up to 1 meter thick by the end of January, providing a sturdy base for the installations.

Evaluation Criteria

The competition places emphasis on creativity in the use of materials, the ability to provide effective shelter, the poetics of assembly and form, and seamless integration with the natural landscape. Designs must also be practical to construct, taking into account the harsh weather conditions and the need for durability.

Impact and Opportunity

Warming Huts V.2025 offers participants a chance to push the boundaries of conventional design, exploring the intersection of functionality, artistic expression, and environmental adaptation. The competition is not just about creating warming huts; it’s an opportunity to contribute to a community-focused project that enhances the winter experience in Winnipeg, transforming the icy rivers into a canvas for innovative architectural and artistic expression.
