W PRIZE 2027 – CHÂTEAU D’IF is the twelfth edition of the W Prize, organized by Fondation Wilmotte for architecture students and recent graduates. The brief asks for a light, reversible and temporary intervention at Château d’If, bringing heritage, performance, artistic practice and the Mediterranean landscape into one proposal without permanently altering the monument.

The official material states that registration closes on 1 February 2027 “at midnight” but does not identify the time zone or resolve whether midnight means the start or end of the stated date. The countdown below is therefore indicative and assumes the end of 1 February in France (22:59 UTC). Entrants should register earlier and confirm the portal deadline directly.

Design brief

The proposal may combine three related dimensions: a temporary venue within or around the castle; a maritime extension such as a floating stage or cultural platform; and an immersive artistic layer visible from the island, sea or Marseille. The intervention must be independent, dismantlable and compatible with the protected monument and the natural setting of Calanques National Park.

Surface areas are deliberately left open. That freedom shifts responsibility to the entrant: the design should show how temporary structure, visitor movement, assembly, reversibility and the relationship between land and water can be resolved without using the site merely as scenery.

Organizer and context

Fondation Wilmotte presents the W Prize as a recurring program focused on contemporary interventions in European heritage settings. The 2027 edition is supported by public heritage institutions, but the competition remains an ideas and exhibition program: publication and display in Venice are documented outcomes, while implementation at Château d’If is not guaranteed.

✦ ArchUp Competition Review

The brief is professionally valuable because it makes reversibility, temporary loading and heritage legibility central design questions rather than decorative afterthoughts. The requirement to work across castle, island and sea also demands a convincing operational sequence, not only an atmospheric image.

The principal cautions are procedural. The midnight registration wording lacks a stated time zone, the submission channel is inconsistent across the official texts, and the named jury is not yet available. Teams should register well before the last day, retain written confirmation of the upload route and test file sizes early. The cash awards are clear, but exhibition is not a promise that the proposal will be built.
