Zaha Hadid Architects has constructed 27 natural daylight tents, modular,

weatherproof structures for refugees and displaced people in Syria, Turkey and Yemen.

The project, which was developed as a joint venture between the Education Above All Foundation (EAA) and Zaha Hadid Architects, consists of:

From newly donated tents to serve and support displaced communities in the three countries: Syria, Turkey and Yemen.

The tents will be donated to the International Organization for Migration and the Qatar Red Crescent.

The news, announced at the ZHA-EAA tent inside the FIFA Fan™ Festival in Doha,

is part of the country’s efforts to ensure that the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 has a lasting impact.

Project features

The main functions of the tents are designed to serve as schools,

clinics and temporary shelter for displaced communities in Syria, Turkey and Yemen.

While 3 tents are already being used as schools for hundreds of displaced Pakistani and Syrian children in Pakistan and Turkey, respectively.

15 tents will be donated to the International Organization for Migration,

of which 10 will serve as schools and 5 health clinics in Turkey and Yemen.

In Syria, the Qatar Red Crescent will be given 12 buildings to serve as shelters for displaced communities in Syria.

Zaha Hadid’s company envisioned the tents as weatherproof structures that could receive natural daylight.

Thanks to their modular configuration capabilities, the tents can be easily moved and reassembled,

including components that can also be recycled for sustainability, making them ideal for displaced populations.

With more than 70 million people displaced in their own countries or living as refugees,

half of whom are under the age of 18, EAA saw an urgent need for adequate infrastructure that could serve as classrooms,

temporary housing, and medical centers for displaced children and their children.

As the office explained: “This is when the Foundation collaborated with Zaha Hadid Architects to create a structure that provides safe,

versatile and sustainable spaces for children to use for play, learning and development.

These newly donated tents are expected to bring safety, learning and play to thousands in Yemen, Syria and Turkey.

“Every one of us has a role to play in ensuring that we achieve the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030,” said Fahad Al-Sulaiti, CEO of EAA.

Fahad Al Sulaiti added: “At EAA, we are committed to doing our part in achieving SDG 4.
