Competition Brief

The Daekyo International Sculpture Symposium is one of South Korea’s most prestigious art events for emerging sculptors, organized jointly by the World Youth and Culture Foundation (WYCF) and the Daekyo Culture Foundation. Established in 2000 as the National University and Graduate School Student Sculpture Competition, it was rebranded in 2012 as an International Symposium to foster global artistic exchange. The 2026 edition is currently open, with registration running 27 May to 5 June 2026.

Unlike conventional submit-and-judge competitions, the Daekyo Symposium is a residency-style program: approximately 12 selected artists from Korean and international universities gather in a shared space at Chung-Ang University’s Davinci Campus in Seoul to create their works live over approximately 18 to 19 nights. Finished works are then displayed at high-profile venues including Nodeul Island Gallery, Seoul. Following the exhibition, many works are permanently installed at Daekyo Group’s resorts, golf courses, or public parks, giving artists lasting public exposure.

Intent

The Symposium positions itself as a bridge between academic study and the professional art world for emerging three-dimensional artists. It is structured around live creation in a collaborative residential setting rather than the submission of pre-existing work. The emphasis is on shared process: participating artists create new work on-site over the residency period, exchanging production techniques, artistic philosophies, and creative approaches in a peer environment supported by institutional mentorship.

The three-dimensional form is the organizing discipline — wood, metal, stone, FRP, and all materials are accepted, with a maximum combined dimension of 5 meters (length + width + height). The residency format means the work is created in dialogue with the environment, the campus, and the peer group rather than in isolation.

Purpose

The Symposium provides one of the most comprehensively funded support packages available to student artists in Asia: base scholarships for all participants, full material and logistics support, round-trip airfare for international students, accommodation and meals throughout, assistant student support (who also receive scholarships), and post-residency exhibition in Seoul. Award winners receive additional prizes on top of the standard participation package. Following the exhibition, permanently installed works at Daekyo Group properties give artists long-term public presence in Korea.

Requirements

Eligibility is open to current undergraduate students (including those on leave of absence) and graduate students majoring in Fine Arts, Sculpture, or 3D Design. Alumni who have completed their programs are generally not eligible. Works must be three-dimensional sculptural pieces. The combined sum of length, width, and height must not exceed 5 meters. All materials are accepted including wood, iron, stone, and FRP.

Selection is based on: portfolio review of previous artistic achievements; project proposal including sketches and technical feasibility of the proposed work; and thematic relevance to the year’s specific artistic vision. Applications are submitted by email with the official application form (PowerPoint) downloadable from the Foundation’s website (actionfordream.org). Submission address: wycf2007@actionfordream.org

Jury

The jury consists of senior professors from major art universities, renowned sculptors, and art critics. For transparency, the selection committee (which evaluates portfolios and proposals) and the judging committee (which evaluates the final created works) are separated into distinct panels.

  1. Selection Committee — Evaluates portfolios and project proposals during the application phase. Composition: senior art academics, professors from major Korean and international art universities. Results announced 19 June 2026.
  2. Judging Committee — Evaluates finished works during the final jury session at Chung-Ang University Davinci Campus on 28 July 2026. Winners announced 6 August 2026 at Nodeul Island Gallery, Seoul. A conflict-of-interest avoidance system (심사회피제) is applied to ensure impartiality.

✦ ArchUp Competition Review

The Daekyo International Sculpture Symposium occupies a structurally distinct position in the competition landscape: it is not a recognition award but a fully funded residential art production program with a $15,000 USD combined prize pool, supported by two institutional foundations with a 26-year track record. The separation of the selection committee and judging committee is a procedural transparency mechanism uncommon in student art programs. The full-support package — base scholarships for all 12 participants, material costs, accommodation, meals, international airfare, production assistants, catalogue, and public exhibition — makes this one of the most generous student art residencies available internationally, comparable to major national arts council grants rather than commercial competition awards. The post-exhibition permanent installation of works at Daekyo Group properties gives artists public presence in Korea that extends well beyond the festival period. The residency format itself is pedagogically distinctive: 18 to 19 nights of live collaborative creation at a university campus, producing new work in real time rather than submitting pre-existing pieces, means the program develops artistic practice rather than simply rewarding it. For three-dimensional artists and sculptors at the student level, particularly those outside Korea who may be eligible as international participants with full airfare provided, the application window (27 May – 5 June 2026) is extremely short — less than two weeks from the current date — and represents a genuine urgency. The program is less directly applicable to architectural students unless their academic program falls within Fine Arts or 3D Design, but for those at the intersection of spatial form and sculptural practice, it is highly relevant.

Final Thoughts

The Daekyo International Sculpture Symposium 2026 is one of the most substantively funded and institutionally grounded student art programs in Asia. For eligible emerging sculptors and three-dimensional artists, the combination of full financial support, live residency creation, peer exchange, public exhibition in Seoul, and permanent installation opportunity makes this a program of rare quality and consequence.

The application deadline of 5 June 2026 is critically urgent — less than two weeks from the current date. Eligible students should download the application form from actionfordream.org and submit to wycf2007@actionfordream.org immediately. For international students, the provision of full round-trip airfare removes the most significant financial barrier to participation.
