Point access block (PAB) housing, commonly known as single stair housing, is a design typology prevalent worldwide, characterized by a single staircase serving all units. This approach supports high-density living, fosters walkable neighborhoods, and enhances urban sustainability. However, in North America, particularly due to strict building codes requiring dual staircases for multi-story buildings, this efficient design is rare. These regulations have contributed to a housing crisis by restricting the range and affordability of housing options.
Competition Overview
Buildner and SAR+ Architects proudly present the Denver Single-Stair Housing Challenge, the 18th competition in Buildner’s Affordable Housing Challenge series. This initiative aims to tackle Colorado’s housing crisis by seeking innovative design solutions for mid-rise single stair housing.
Design Challenge
Participants are invited to reimagine single stair housing for mid-rise buildings, up to six stories, on underutilized lots in Denver. The designs should adhere to the city’s zoning and urban planning goals while proposing innovative solutions to overcome the existing regulatory barriers that limit the implementation of this housing type.
Objectives
The challenge focuses on exposing and addressing the limitations of outdated building codes, aiming to influence policy changes that would enable more diverse, affordable, and sustainable housing solutions in Colorado and beyond.
