Redwood Ripple: A Spiraling Treehouse Platform in the Heart of California’s Forests

Home » News » Redwood Ripple: A Spiraling Treehouse Platform in the Heart of California’s Forests

California – August 13, 2025
Deep within the forests of Northern California, the Redwood Ripple treehouse has officially been completed. It features a spiraling elevated platform rising 35 feet above the forest floor and spanning nearly 500 square feet. Designed and built by O2 Treehouse, the project draws inspiration from the form and growth patterns of wild mushrooms. It offers a layered experience that blends play, exploration, and relaxation.

A Form That Grows Like a Mushroom

The structure relies on laser-cut steel frames, carefully anchored to surrounding trees without causing harm. Each frame has been customized to fit the natural contours of the tree it embraces. From a distance, the platform resembles a giant mushroom emerging from the forest. Meanwhile, up close, it reveals a series of interactive pathways and spaces.

A Spiraling Stair and a Gathering Deck

Visitors enter via a spiral staircase modeled after a shelf mushroom. This leads them from the forest floor to an upper deck shaped like the hull of a ship. This space is intended for social gatherings or quiet retreats. Beneath the deck, a network of turquoise and blue net tunnels creates a suspended playground for children, offering different layers of activity in one cohesive structure.

Walkways to the “Crystal Ball”

Extending from the main deck, a series of hanging walkways lead to the Crystal Ball. It is a geodesic glass structure with color-shifting LED lighting. By night, it becomes a glowing focal point in the forest, casting and refracting light across the surrounding canopy.

Precision Details and Bigger Ambitions

The treehouse incorporates CNC-cut decorative panels and finely crafted details throughout. According to O2 Treehouse, Redwood Ripple is its most ambitious project to date. It adds to a portfolio of more than 100 treehouses built over the past 18 years. The company is now seeking funding for future editions of similarly imaginative designs.

ArchUp Editorial Insight

This article presents the Redwood Ripple as a spiralling treehouse platform rising 35 feet in Northern California’s forests. It is supported by laser-cut steel frames attached to trees without harm. The images reveal a shelf-mushroom-inspired stair, a ship-like upper deck, and net tunnels in turquoise and blue. These elements add vibrancy to the scene. While the design delivers an immersive visual experience, it lacks deeper insight into the environmental context or sustainability strategies. This raises questions about replicability in varied ecosystems. Nevertheless, the integration of playful spaces within an organic form positions the project as a notable case of architectural interaction with nature.
