Competition Brief

TCK The Civic Kiosk 2026 is an open international architecture competition organised by Terraviva Competitions, a Milan-based private competition platform. The competition invites architects, designers, urbanists, engineers, artists, students, makers, and activists worldwide to rethink the traditional newsstand as a piece of micro-architecture for contemporary urban public space. Participants have complete freedom to choose any site in the world. The submission deadline is 4 December 2026 at 15:00 CET and winners are announced 11 January 2027.

Intent

The newsstand kiosk is positioned in the brief as a typology facing an existential crisis in the digital age: once a vital daily hub for information, culture, and social interaction, it now occupies an ambiguous and often neglected role in the urban landscape. The competition asks participants to reimagine not only the programme and services the kiosk might offer, but the architectural object itself — its form, materials, spatial configuration, and identity. How does a 21st-century kiosk look, operate, and transform throughout the day? The brief frames the kiosk as an opportunity to transform a forgotten urban typology into a new landmark for civic life, capable of revitalising its role within public space by introducing new programmes, services, and experiences.

Purpose

This is a conceptual ideas competition. Participants may choose any urban site worldwide. The winning proposal will be described as the most compelling architectural reinvention of the kiosk typology as assessed by the jury. All awarded projects are published on Terraviva channels and exhibited in a public exhibition. A 15% launch promo discount is available using code TCK15XTVC, valid for Early Registration until 29 June 2026. All cash prizes are paid in EUR at a fixed nominal rate of 1 EUR = 1.25 USD for fiscal reasons.

Requirements

Open to individuals and teams of any size. Teams with a single registration have no member limit. Teams using a monthly membership plan are limited to 5 members including the team leader. Submission consists of one A1 horizontal panel (594 x 841 mm) in PDF or JPG format and a brief text describing the proposal. The Brief PDF is available in English, Italian, Spanish, and French. Optional extra services include Extend (72-hour deadline extension), Verify (formal compliance check), and Flex to Withdraw (withdrawal without losing registration fee). ✦ ArchUp Competition Review

The Civic Kiosk is one of Terraviva’s more typologically specific and intellectually grounded briefs. The newsstand as subject is genuinely under-theorised in contemporary architectural discourse despite its ubiquity and its acute relevance to questions of information, commerce, and civic encounter in public space. The brief’s invitation to rethink both programme and form simultaneously, rather than simply reprogramming an existing shell, creates a more demanding and productive design problem than most micro-architecture competitions. The free site choice is a sensible decision that allows participants to anchor proposals in real urban conditions they understand rather than an unfamiliar assigned location. The jury of eight is internationally composed with credible practice affiliations spanning AMDL Circle, HKS Architects, Nikken Sekkei, and Alexandria University. The early registration fee of €69 is in line with Terraviva’s standard pricing. The total cash prize pool of $6,000 USD is modest but consistent with the single-panel submission format. For architects and urban designers interested in micro-scale civic infrastructure and the future of public space amenities, this is a well-framed brief worth serious engagement.
