Competition Brief

The City of Odense and project partners have launched an international ideas competition for the transformation of the former Odense University Hospital (OUH) site into “Nyt Brokvarter” – a new mixed-use urban district. The competition seeks visionary concepts to repurpose the large hospital area into a vibrant, sustainable neighbourhood with housing, public spaces, and urban functions.

Intent

The intent is to explore innovative ways to convert the ageing hospital complex and surrounding land into a lively, inclusive “brokvarter” (neighbourhood) that contributes to Odense’s urban development goals.

Purpose

It aims to generate high-quality ideas for the site’s future while respecting existing structures, integrating with the city, and addressing contemporary urban challenges such as sustainability and liveability.

Requirements

This is an ideas competition. Proposals must be submitted anonymously via the Dalux tender platform. Submissions include conceptual plans, illustrations, and supporting material as specified in the competition programme. Participants can download extensive background material including site surveys, 2D/3D models, photos, and planning documents. Questions are submitted via Dalux and answered anonymously.

✦ ArchUp Competition Review

The transformation of Odense University Hospital into Nyt Brokvarter is organised by the City of Odense and project partners, with Grandville acting as competition secretary. Jury transparency is currently low, as no individual members have been publicly announced. The competition is an open international ideas format focused on large-scale urban redevelopment of a former hospital site. No entry fee is required, while rewards are expected to include cash prizes and possible follow-on commissions, though exact figures remain unpublished. For participants, the primary benefit lies in the potential for winning a commission and gaining visibility in a significant Danish urban project, rather than pure conceptual recognition. The lack of a named jury at this stage reduces immediate clarity on evaluation expertise and process credibility.

Large-scale hospital-to-neighbourhood transformations often relate to current practices in urban design and adaptive reuse. For more on similar redevelopment strategies, readers may explore coverage of other major site conversions in architecture. The emphasis on creating a new sustainable neighbourhood also connects to ongoing themes in sustainability.

Conclusion and final thoughts

This competition is driven by public authorities in Odense with support from established urban advisory firms, giving it a solid institutional foundation but limited independent track record as a high-profile international event. It is relatively new in its current form and tied to a specific municipal redevelopment agenda. While the scale of the site and potential for implementation offer genuine professional opportunities, the absence of a published jury and prize details at launch reduces transparency. Its contribution to the architecture industry may include advancing ideas on brownfield transformation, yet success will depend on whether winning concepts influence the actual development. Participation carries moderate value for teams interested in Danish urban projects, though the single-stage ideas format demands significant effort with uncertain progression to built work.
