Uphold

Uphold Uphold is an ideas competition for a human-rights civic centre in Helsinki’s Verkkosaari district. The brief asks architecture to organise a visitor journey through learning, commemoration and reflection while responding to a compact waterfront-adjacent site.
This is an ideas competition, not an announced construction commission. The cash award changes with paid-entry volume; only one juror is named on the live page.

Requirements and evaluation
| Design task | Create a civic centre that sequences anticipation, discovery, struggle, learning and contemplation. |
|---|---|
| Core criteria | Narrative clarity, balance, landmark presence, site response, accessibility, function, social impact and sustainability. |
| Submission format | Digital submission through UNI only. The platform recommends about five anonymous JPEG boards near 2800 × 3500 px (up to 20 MB each) plus a 2:1 landscape cover; these are general recommendations unless the brief states otherwise. English is the base submission language, or another language accompanied by an English translation. |
| Awards | Dynamic awards: the displayed early band begins with a USD 100 cash award plus a UNI membership stated as worth USD 100, a certificate and editorial feature. Later bands increase with registrations; the advertised USD 7,000 is a maximum at 200 entries, not a guaranteed fund. |
| Jury | Dr. Ayman A. Hassan El Beda is the only named juror on the reviewed live page. |
| Rights and implementation | The reviewed public pages do not state a built commission. Each entry needs its own paid registration; entrants should review the platform terms, copyright provisions and current award band before payment. |
✦ ArchUp Competition Review
The brief has a coherent architectural programme and enough site controls to support a serious spatial proposal. Its strongest test is how the route, memorial content and everyday civic uses work together without turning the building into a symbolic object alone.
The professional limitation is equally clear: the public page offers no client, implementation path or fixed prize fund. Entrants should therefore value it as a speculative design exercise and verify the live award band before paying.
