✦ ArchUp Competition Review

The architectural opportunity is substantial: an industrial interior can support a museum without being reduced to a neutral exhibition box. A persuasive proposal would show what is retained, where new work touches the existing structure, and how visitors understand the transition between production history and contemporary cultural use. The curatorial idea should inform circulation, daylight and the sequence of rooms.

The committee considers the award structure central to the participation decision. Recognition in this competition and success in a later annual award are separate outcomes. The advertised annual fund should therefore not be treated as money available to this competition’s winners automatically. A team should judge whether the design investigation itself justifies the registration fee and working time.

For a reuse proposal, a credible concept also needs a boundary between design ambition and unresolved technical matters. Structural capacity, accessibility, environmental control and maintenance should shape the approach from the outset. A striking rendering alone cannot establish whether an existing industrial building can support the proposed museum operation.
