Multidisciplinary practice Otherworlds, has expanded a Goan villa with an expansive bamboo canopy and restaurant in Panjim, Goa, India.

The 6,200 sq ft (576 sq m) restaurant, extending from an old Goan villa,

is inspired by the outdoor verandah seen in most Goan homes.

According to Otherworlds, the balcony features thick, curved walls with benches built into its sides,

It is equipped with brightly colored hand-poured concrete.

The balcony is a welcome gesture from the home, gently inviting guests inside.

Enriched by the richness of materials and the flowing bamboo canopy,

the restaurant appears as a project that blurs the boundaries of indoor and outdoor spaces.

The restaurant’s name is taken from the Catalan word Tertulia,

which means “interesting and pleasant conversation between friends.”

According to the studio, Goa also has a similar sense of community, although it is more intimate and personal.

The studio explained: “In a time of modern architecture and rampant urbanization,

All homes tend to become very independent, private and detached, disconnected from the city or neighborhood.”

The studio added: “The balcony becomes more important at this time as it was built with the idea of strengthening the kinship between the house and the neighborhood.”

“It is the place where inside meets outside, where the boundaries of outside and inside are blurred.”

The entire restaurant extends outwards to form more enclosures, embodying the idea of Balcao.”

The studio envisioned the restaurant to be an extension of the house,

and while it would be a part of it, it would also feel like a part of the city.

A restaurant full of organic dynamism

While designing the restaurant the architects were greatly influenced by the organic forms found in nature and the ephemeral quality of natural light.

“Goa being a massively tropical place, most of daily life is spent outdoors, within nature,” the studio said.

The studio’s goal is to “create an immersive atmospheric experience that inspires the feeling of being in a lush tropical outdoor space under an overgrown natural canopy.”
