An Upper East Side townhouse is transformed into a chic French bistro

Manhattan’s Upper East Side has recently experienced a notable revival. Once perceived as somewhat formal and conservative, the area has seen its rental prices remain relatively stable compared to other neighborhoods in the city, attracting a new wave of younger, creative residents. This influx has brought with it a variety of new dining and nightlife options that maintain the elegant charm of the UES while appealing to those seeking innovative and stylish experiences.

A standout establishment in this transformation is Chez Fifi, located in a quaint townhouse nestled between two larger structures at the intersection of 74th Street and Lexington Avenue. Since its opening in December 2024, securing a reservation has become a challenging endeavor.

The charming two-story venue immerses visitors in the ambiance of 1930s Paris, featuring luxurious mahogany paneling, an array of bevel-edged mirrors, and a diverse collection of artworks. The menu showcases classic French cuisine alongside beloved dishes from San Sebastián, including foie gras terrine paired with jamón Iberico as charcuterie starters, frogs’ legs or Basque deviled crab for main courses, and filet mignon au poivre and wild Dover sole as the featured entrées.

Founded by brothers Joshua and David Foulquier, who have deep roots in the area, this establishment pays homage to their French heritage, particularly honoring their mother, Fifi. The interiors, designed by Stockholm-based Joyn Studio, also reflect a hint of Scandinavian influence. Helena Eliason, co-founder of Joyn alongside partners Lisa Grape and Ida Wanler, remarked, “This project embodies our philosophy of crafting environments that enhance people’s moods through a profound understanding of culture, behavior, and sensory experiences.” The Foulquier brothers were introduced to Joyn’s work through their design of the acclaimed three-Michelin-starred Frantzén in Stockholm.

At Chez Fifi, the dining area on the ground floor features a low ceiling that fosters an intimate atmosphere. The rich mahogany tones that dominate the room are beautifully contrasted by the navy upholstery of the cushioned booths, complemented by a Payne’s gray ceiling enhanced with cove lighting. The blue accents are echoed in the patterned curtains and wallpaper that surround the booths on one side, while a series of two-top tables align with a red banquette on the opposite side. Slim vertical mirrored strips above the seating extend in full height along the narrow staircase leading to the upper level.

Designed for savoring a variety of martinis and French-inspired cocktails, the upper-floor salon is separated by a cased opening into a compact bar area and a cozy lounge. The bar showcases vibrant bookmatched stone with rippled marbling on both the counter front and back bar, along with a coffered ceiling that recalls the renowned Loos American Bar in Vienna. In the lounge, the ceiling features curved corners adorned with criss-crossed molding details. The army green walls provide a striking backdrop for the wooden furniture and ochre accents, while a striking black marble fireplace serves as the focal point of the room.

Elements such as ceiling-mounted glassware and bottle racks, double-headed sconces featuring fabric shades, columns and counters with zig-zag designs, along with a sign inspired by those marking Parisian streets, collectively establish an immersive atmosphere that is quickly gaining popularity among the discerning clientele of the Upper East Side.
