BIG has marked the groundbreaking of 175 Third Street, a large mixed-use development planned along the Gowanus Canal in Brooklyn.

Designed by Bjarke Ingels Group in collaboration with dencityworks, the project is conceived as a three-dimensional neighborhood of stacked and interlocking building volumes. The composition steps toward the canal in cascading concrete forms, using shifted blocks, chamfered corners, terraces, and planted roof gardens to soften the scale of the development.

The 27-story building is expected to contain more than 1,000 residential units, including approximately 250 affordable apartments. Its horseshoe-shaped geometry opens toward the waterfront, allowing light, air, and views to reach the interior courtyard while connecting the block to the canal edge.

A 28,000-square-foot public park is planned as part of the project, with landscape work by Field Operations in collaboration with the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation. The design links the internal green spaces with the public waterfront, blurring the boundary between building, landscape, and canal infrastructure.

Developed by Charney Companies and Tavros, 175 Third Street forms part of the wider transformation of Gowanus from an industrial corridor into a dense waterfront district shaped by housing, public space, and canal rehabilitation.
