Competition Brief

The International Urban Project Award (IUPA) 2026 is an international architecture and urban design competition organized by Bauwelt and World Architecture Magazine. The 2026 edition is held under the theme “Architecture That Speaks”, inviting submissions of built projects that contribute to urban identity, public life, and meaningful engagement between architecture and the city.

The competition focuses on completed architectural, landscape, and urban projects that demonstrate how design can shape civic experience and create memorable places. Rather than rewarding iconic forms alone, the award examines how projects communicate with their surroundings and contribute to the social and cultural life of cities.

Discussions around the relationship between architecture and urban identity continue to shape contemporary practice, as seen in projects featured on ArchUp Projects and broader conversations about urban transformation.

Intent

The competition aims to recognize built projects that strengthen connections between people and the urban environment. Organizers seek works that address the challenges of contemporary cities while creating meaningful public experiences.

Projects are expected to demonstrate how architecture can act as a catalyst for urban regeneration, social interaction, and place-making rather than functioning solely as isolated objects.

Purpose

The purpose of IUPA 2026 is to highlight projects that respond to urban anonymity and contribute to the development of distinct local identities. The competition encourages architects, planners, and landscape architects to explore how design can improve the relationship between buildings, public space, and communities.

This objective aligns with ongoing discussions surrounding urban design and public space, topics frequently explored through studies and case analyses published on ArchUp Urban Planning.

Requirements

  • Open to architects, urban planners, landscape architects, and interdisciplinary teams worldwide.
  • Projects must be built or substantially completed.
  • Eligible projects must have been completed between 2022 and 2026.
  • Each office may submit a maximum of 3 projects.
  • Projects must be submitted for the first time and must not have been previously entered into IUPA.
  • Developers may participate jointly with architects or design teams.
  • Submissions must demonstrate a meaningful contribution to urban life and city identity.

The competition encourages entries ranging from architectural interventions to large-scale urban and landscape projects. Similar themes can be found in discussions about public realm design and city-making on ArchUp Architecture.

Jury

At the time of publication, the organizers have not announced the official jury panel for IUPA 2026.

The jury members will be published by the organizers closer to the evaluation stage of the competition.

Conclusion

The International Urban Project Award 2026 focuses on the role of architecture in shaping urban identity and public life. By limiting eligibility to recently completed projects, the competition places emphasis on real-world impact rather than speculative proposals.

The theme “Architecture That Speaks” encourages participants to consider how buildings and public spaces communicate with their surroundings and communities. While the competition does not offer publicly disclosed monetary rewards, its international visibility and focus on built work position it as a platform for evaluating the broader urban contribution of architecture.
