When the Mind Betrays Its Owner: Why Does a Familiar Design Suddenly Look Strange?
A research gap in cognitive psychology around the phenomenon of “jamais vu” may explain jury errors and confidence crises inside the architectural studio
Every architect knows that strange moment: after weeks spent on a single floor plan, they suddenly stare at it as though seeing it for the first time. The lines drawn by their own hand, the proportions adjusted a hundred times over, suddenly appear fragmented, foreign, as if someone else had produced them. This is not simply visual fatigue, but a cognitive effect. It points to a psychological phenomenon barely documented in the scientific literature, known as jamais vu — the exact inverse of the far more famous déjà vu. Where déjà vu is the sensation that a new place feels familiar despite being genuinely unfamiliar, jamais vu is the sensation that something entirely familiar — your own name, your door handle, or your own design — has suddenly become strange and incomprehensible.
The paradox is that despite occurring often in fleeting daily experience, this phenomenon remains almost entirely unstudied compared with its more famous twin. While déjà vu has decades of laboratory studies and documented neural models behind it, no agreed scientific definition of jamais vu exists to this day, nor any single theory explaining its mechanism, as researcher Chris Moulin and colleagues confirmed in the most recent studies attempting to induce it under laboratory conditions. This gap — between a phenomenon that can be observed, named, and felt, and the complete absence of any theoretical framework explaining it — is precisely what makes it fertile ground for reinterpreting purely professional practices in the built environment: from jury fatigue, to the endless spiral of redesign, to a resident’s estrangement from their own longtime home.
A Phenomenon Without a Name in the Architect’s Vocabulary
One of the greatest obstacles to understanding jamais vu is the absence of any precise classification of its forms. Just as researchers distinguished between déjà vu (a false sense of familiarity) and déjà vécu (a false sense of fully recollecting details of a scene never actually experienced), no equivalent distinction yet exists among types of jamais vu: is it the loss of meaning in a repeated word? Estrangement from a familiar face? A sense of being lost in a place that is supposedly one’s own home? This classificatory void, according to Moulin and colleagues, is the first obstacle to any serious research on the subject.
In the architectural context, this taxonomic void has a direct, unnamed reflection. When an architect opens a design file for the fiftieth time in a single day, or when a contractor reviews the same structural drawing for consecutive weeks, a cognitive state emerges that closely mirrors what researchers describe: a temporary loss of the ability to “see” the design as it actually is, replaced by a vague sense of strangeness or doubt about the validity of decisions already made. This condition, despite its prevalence within engineering offices, does not even have a professional name acknowledging its existence — just as jamais vu itself still lacks a unified scientific definition.
Jury Syndrome: When Judgment Dissolves After the Fiftieth Look
The most striking discovery in this field came from a simple experiment led by Moulin and colleagues: they asked healthy participants to write a single word repeatedly — roughly thirty times within about a minute — and found that between 55 and 71 percent of participants began to feel the word was “strange” or “unreal,” despite being certain of its meaning and correct spelling. This phenomenon is known as semantic satiation: excessive repetition of a single stimulus depletes the neural network responsible for processing it, temporarily severing form from meaning.
Projecting this finding onto architectural jury culture opens a research avenue that has never been explored: what happens to a juror’s perception after reviewing the thirtieth entry in a single architectural competition? Does their evaluative system begin to “satiate” in the same way a word’s meaning becomes satiated? If the jamais vu mechanism applies to visual and spatial perception the same way it applies to words — a question that remains open even within the psychological literature itself — then the sequencing of project presentations during jury sessions, and the number of hours spent in continuous review, could be hidden factors distorting the final verdict just as much as the design criteria themselves. No study to date has tested this hypothesis directly, making it entirely untouched research ground.
The Architect and the Design: When the Master Drawing Becomes a Stranger
A deeper intersection exists between the cognitive psychology literature and the behavior of a designer who revisits their own work dozens of times. Separate studies on obsessive-compulsive disorder, conducted by researchers Boschen and Vuksanovic, showed that repeated checking of a single action — such as closing a door or confirming a lock — produces a gradual erosion of confidence in memory and recalled detail, even though actual performance accuracy does not decline. In other words: repetition does not corrupt the act itself, but corrupts one’s subjective confidence in it.
This model precisely explains a familiar scene inside architecture offices: the designer who reopens the same drawing dozens of times searching for “the error,” growing more doubtful of their decisions the more they scrutinize, even though the design has not objectively changed. This loop — which might professionally be called “analysis paralysis” — now finds a plausible cognitive explanation that goes beyond mere personal perfectionism, placing it within a scientific framework that can be studied and measured. The absence of any research linking the confidence-erosion phenomenon produced by repeated checking with architects’ behavior when reviewing their own designs represents a clear research gap, particularly since the measurement tools used in OCD studies could be adapted with relative ease to a design studio setting.
When a Familiar Building Loses Its Identity in the Eyes of Its Occupant
The least studied dimension of this field is the experience of the end user of a space, not merely the designer. Field studies, including work by O’Connor and Moulin, indicate that jamais vu occurs in daily life at a much lower rate than déjà vu — roughly once every six months, compared with three occurrences of déjà vu within the same sample period — but these figures were gathered incidentally from studies originally designed for a different phenomenon. No dedicated field data exist to track when, where, and how people feel estranged from familiar places: the home they have lived in for twenty years, the neighborhood they walk through daily, or even a room that has simply been repainted a new color.
This epidemiological void, so to speak, carries direct relevance to fields such as post-occupancy evaluation and placemaking. If moments of estrangement from a familiar place constitute a measurable and predictable phenomenon — linked, for instance, to renovation, subtle lighting changes, or even length of residency — then urban planners would gain an interpretive tool for understanding the vague complaints residents sometimes voice about a “sense of strangeness” toward neighborhoods that have not fundamentally changed. No large-scale survey study to date has connected these reports to the psychological framework of jamais vu, even though the methodological tools required — such as experience-sampling surveys that capture user experience in real time rather than relying on delayed retrospective memory — are now available and mature.
Architectural Neuroscience: The Gap That Has Not Yet Been Opened
Among the most surprising gaps in the original literature is the complete absence of any neuroimaging or electroencephalographic study conducted while jamais vu is occurring, even though déjà vu has been the subject of advanced research using direct electrical brain stimulation and functional magnetic resonance imaging — research that identified regions such as the hippocampus and adjacent cortex as key centers for processing familiarity. The irony is that jamais vu is experimentally easier to work with than déjà vu, since it can be reliably induced in the laboratory through repeated writing of a single word, whereas déjà vu remains resistant to voluntary recall.
This gap opens the door to an emerging field that might be called applied architectural neuroscience: if a laboratory experiment could be designed to induce a sense of strangeness toward a repeatedly viewed architectural space — by exposing participants intensively to a single building facade or floor plan — then measuring the accompanying brain activity could reveal whether spatial novelty-and-familiarity processing networks operate through a mechanism different from their linguistic counterpart. No attempt has yet been made to design such an experiment, even though the methodological tools are, in principle, ready to be borrowed directly from the “word alienation” paradigm developed by Moulin and his team.
Individual Differences: Why Do Some Architects Maintain a Longer Critical Distance?
One of the most puzzling findings in the literature is that people who report frequent déjà vu experiences in their daily lives also report frequent jamais vu — meaning the two phenomena are correlated in real-world experience. Yet when jamais vu was tested experimentally through the word-repetition task, no correlation emerged between a person’s susceptibility to the experience and their déjà vu frequency, age, or tendency toward dissociation — all factors known to correlate with déjà vu. This contradiction, as the researchers themselves describe it, remains a genuine unresolved puzzle.
Professionally, this contradiction may explain why some architects maintain a healthy critical distance from their work even after long hours of labor, while others quickly lose that distance and fall into either excessive self-doubt or, conversely, uncritical satisfaction with their design. Studying individual differences in this susceptibility — through measures such as memory confidence calibration accuracy, tendency toward dissociation, and general anxiety — could give architecture firms a tool for understanding why some designers need a longer “viewing break” than others before rendering final judgment on a piece of work.

Competition juries, review boards, and design studios are procedural systems built around volume — dozens of submissions cycled through fixed timeframes and compressed review windows imposed by procurement schedules and institutional deadlines. No governance framework in architectural evaluation currently accounts for the cognitive degradation produced by that volume. The absence of mandated pacing, rotation, or rest intervals in jury protocols is not an oversight of individual jurors; it is the predictable output of an evaluation infrastructure optimized for throughput rather than perceptual accuracy. Similarly, the endless self-review loops inside studios are the logical outcome of billing structures and liability pressures that reward continuous revision over decisive closure. The strangeness described here is not a flaw in the architect’s mind. It is the visible residue of systems never designed to measure what sustained repetition does to judgment.
