The Psychology of Enclosure and Spatial Framing

The architectural experience begins with a close relationship to the mountainous topography, as the built mass is not conceived as a body separate from the site, but rather as an extension of it, using enclosure and containment to shape a quieter interior experience. The solid walls reinterpret the logic of the “cave” as a spatial model that conceals portions of the exterior landscape before gradually opening the experience toward the surrounding nature. Changes in level, natural stone, and small pools also contribute to slowing the transition between different parts of the project, allowing movement to become a means of discovering the relationship between the built mass and the terrain rather than merely a functional passage between spaces.

Mountainous Scenography and the Direction of Light

The presence of the mountain is not limited to direct views; it is reshaped through the way openings, roofs, and projections organize the trajectory of light and vision. The contrast between shaded areas and illuminated surfaces gives architectural elements a changing presence throughout the day, while openings and framed views selectively reveal specific portions of the natural landscape rather than presenting it as a complete and direct panorama. In this way, light becomes an element that connects interior and exterior, allowing materials and surfaces to undergo visual transformations as lighting conditions change. The mountainous landscape thus becomes part of the everyday spatial experience rather than merely serving as its visual backdrop.

Intermediary Surfaces and Spatial Transformation

Windows and doors perform a role that extends beyond the conventional separation between interior and exterior, functioning instead as transitional zones that regulate the degree of connection with the surrounding landscape. Wide, vertically extended openings expand the visual field and connect the interior spaces with the mountainous scenery, while open interior elements allow views to continue between different parts of the project rather than dividing them into isolated units. This relationship becomes particularly significant in the public areas, where glazed surfaces coexist with storage elements and open timber components, creating overlapping layers of visibility, concealment, and light. The boundary between interior and exterior therefore becomes more than a dividing line; it becomes an intermediary zone in which the degree of openness changes according to movement and the user’s position within the building.

Material Expression and Contextual Continuity

The project relies on a strong presence of materials associated with the site, particularly stone and exposed concrete, allowing materiality to perform a role that extends beyond structural or finishing functions to visually anchor the building within its mountainous context. Stone used in circulation areas, entrances, and floors establishes a tangible continuity between architecture and ground, while exposed concrete introduces a more rigorous and weighty presence to the built mass. The contrast between the two materials can be read as a means of establishing a dialogue between nature and construction: stone evokes the irregularity and texture of the site, while concrete gives the architecture its geometric clarity. Through this contrast, the architecture does not attempt to imitate the mountain literally, but rather reinterprets some of its material qualities through a contemporary language.

Structural Weight and Sensory Balance

The reinforced-concrete frame gives the building a pronounced structural presence appropriate to the mountainous nature of the site, while openings, variations in massing, and white elements visually mitigate the effect of this weight. This balance emerges through the contrast between solid surfaces and open areas, and between concrete masses and spaces that admit light and views. Stairs, vertical elements, and the distribution of vegetation further break down the continuous reading of the mass, so that the structure is not perceived as a single solid volume, but as a series of interwoven layers and spaces. A balance is thereby established between the permanence of the construction and the continuity of movement within it, with the mass becoming a framework for organizing the experience rather than an obstacle to it.

Spatial Narrative and the Scenography of Wandering

The project’s final experience unfolds through movement between levels and spaces characterized by varying degrees of enclosure and openness. Guest rooms provide more private zones, while the public areas gradually extend toward spaces that accommodate multiple paths of movement and sight. Changes in level, the succession of shadow and light, and the presence of water and stone elements all contribute to shaping this sequence and slowing the perception of place rather than reducing it to a direct route. This strategy can be related to the concept of “wandering and dwelling” in the traditions of Chinese landscape painting, in which the environment is not discovered from a single viewpoint, but through successive movement and the changing sequence of views. The project thus becomes a spatial experience that is gradually discovered, where privacy coexists with openness, and the mountain is experienced through a series of scenes and thresholds rather than appearing as a single, fixed vista.

The project approaches mountain architecture as a controlled system of concealment, revelation, and movement. Its heavy concrete frame and stone surfaces do not merely imitate the terrain, but engage with it through calculated openings, changes in level, carefully framed views, and shifting light. Architecture here becomes an instrument for organizing perception, positioning the user between geological mass and built enclosure within a contemporary conception of architecture that favors contextual integration over visual autonomy.

Yet this reading may attribute a poetic value to enclosure that exceeds its material reality. The cave metaphor may conceal a less romantic reality: dense concrete construction, extensive glazing, water features, and the complexity of circulation all require substantial resources, energy, and continuous maintenance. The sense of a natural extension of the mountain is therefore not automatic, but produced through a technologically intensive system. What appears to be contextual integration may, in part, constitute an engineered simulation of geological continuity, revealing a tension between spatial authenticity and the cost of producing it.
